If you could get it there - keep it there for a month, and get it back again for less than about £1000 then it'd be cheaper than hiring a car over there for a month. Imagine doing New York to New York round the US in a VX. How Cool would that be?

Actually, scrub that - I got a ticket in a yanky barge-mobile, I'd be shot in a VX!

Looked into it before. It's not an option. The VX is way off the US' requirements by law and the federal Elise had to undergo a lot of work to get approved. You can register it as a kit/touring car, but it's only valid for a year. If it's still in the country then, they will crush it.

What is so wrong with a Vx for it to be legal in the US?

Better question: What's wrong with the US that they won't allow a VX?

Not strictly true - have a read of their site. As they're selling the vehicles as kit cars, they're effectively exempted.

And notwithstanding that, those of us with diplomatic visas can say 'yah boo sucks' to all of that safety guff anyway, because AFAIAA, you can bring your car with you. :P

More info <here>

From the site you gave :

Nonconforming vehicles must be exported within one year and may not be sold in the U.S.

The VX is most deffiently a non conforming vehicle.
I asked this question a while ago on the elise talk (US lizzie site) and they gave me loads of info summarised into what I posted above.

What is so wrong with a Vx for it to be legal in the US?

It would be easier to list the things which were deemed acceptable.

Here's one of the criteria which makes me laugh:
"There must be some way of opening the boot from the inside, and it must be clearly labeled."

I'd imagine that trapped dwarf with a torch would be happy to find the release catch in the Lizzies boot ..... lol

 I'm not disagreeing with the one year limit on standard imported cars - have a read of the website in the OP.
