expansion bottle was leaking...

You mean a failure in the tank itself and not a connection? Whereabouts?

Should last longer than a couple of years...

There have been a few failures now - don't think the plastic is UV stable. Normally it wouldn't matter, but on the VX it's obviously in daylight all the time. Typically they are failing around the small pipe connection at the back near the throat.

Mine looks suspiciously like that...wonder if that's why my coolant was so low...

Happened to mine as well. Cracks around the part where the pipe joins the tank. Had it replaced under warranty. Not sure it would be replaced under warranty by many dealers (I think a lot would regard it as wear and tear), but there are some that do give good service (especially if you know the right people, eh Willow?). IMO it is a manufacturing defect - the plastic should not just give out like that. Never had it happen in any other car (and I've had cars for ten years straight in the past).

well, replaced mine this morning thumbsup then went for a 120 mile blat around wales to make sure all was well.... POP to do....nay worries I did this:- disconnected the breather (top) pipe disconnected the tank retaining clip (go careful not to break the plastic of the bottle) remove the expansion tank from its holding brackets and lower it underneath the upper fitting where the clip is (any body who has fitted a viper will understand this) disconnect the feed pipe (20mm ish one) if you do this right and have the expansion tank in the right place you wont lose any of the existing fluid... disconnect the flow sensor...simple twist and unlock the re-fit is the haynes manual classic 'do the reverse' i then emptied what was left in the old expansion tank into the new one.. I ran it for a couple of minutes and squeezed the pipes to clear any air pockets...nay worries like i said..POP thumbsup i only needed half a glass of distilled water to top the fokka up B)

strangely  ive never noticed this before... but stopped after a run today, (and now i have a clear bottle) i noticed the fluid was running constantly into the expansion bottle from the top pipe... im hoping thats normal?
