You missed the following:
1. Bash you head on the underside of the car while locating the sump bolt 
2. Burn your fingers on the sump bolt and drop it into the oil pan. 
3. Fish around in the oil pan for the bolt, covering yourself in oil.

Its easier to fit the new filter if you remove the old one first
