as I understand it, you can swap, it's just you won't get the benefits of a smart meter which means you will have to make manual meter readings. To be fair having a smart meter fitted has highlighted that we had something switched on which was unnecessary, so we are now saving money.Having a smart meter fitted limits the amount of tariffs/companies you can choose from if you want to change supplier

I've just changed too and quite a few of the tariffs said that you couldn't have it if you had an existing smart meter. You could swap to that company but on a more expensive tariff.

0345 numbers are normal local rate
That's incorrect according to the Govt, unless you think paying up to 55p per minute on a mobile is an acceptable "local rate": https://www.gov.uk/call-charges.
I call that expensive, particularly as it will inevitably take a lot of waiting. Even if it took an optimistic 15 mins of waiting that could be £8 - just to get some basic info about my own meter/bill.

http://www.area-code...345-numbers.php Don't believe everything the govt tell you. When I was talking (=ranting) with Scottish Power I asked them about changing to another supplier and how it would affect the smart meter. As said above, the features on the meter wouldn't necessarily work and manual readings may need to be taken. So why aren't we all using the same system with the same meters - well apparently they're thinking of doing that which will result in another meter change. It all gives me the feeling that they simply haven't thought the whole thing through.

Or try using Topcashback or Quidco and switch using one of their comparison engines. You can get substantial cashback that way.
Damnit, I wish I'd thought of doing that.

Im in a similar position. With SP on a fixed price deal thats ends at the end of Jan with their best deal on the app being a 40% hike. Went to u-switch on my phone while watching TV, found a much better deal with SP and clicked the button to switch. Looks like its all sorted So pleased I didnt bother phoning them based on your experience.Sort of on the same vein as Nev, I'm with Scottish Power and my fixed price tariff is coming to an end at the end of this month. The new tariff they offered me would be 40% more expensive, SP said they couldn't do any better, so I decided to call USwitch. They pointed me towards a tariff on their site which they thought would fit me, which was marginally more expensive than the tariff I'm on by - SCOTTISH bleeding POWER. USwitch said as I was already a SP customer I would have to go through SP. SP said no I would have to go through US as it was a tariff exclusive to US. Eventually got the switch done by using the US app on my tablet - ie not involving humans. There are over 130 companies selling electricity/gas on the US site all with different tariffs. Some are much more expensive than others. They all can't be producing electricity/gas so they're just selling it on. It just seems like a method to confuse the consumer. I was also told by SP that the Daily Standing Charge was to cover the cost of their equipment on my property ie the meter. So am I within my rights to charge them rent for the space it takes up? Also, since having a smart meter fitted the billing of my electricity has gone completely to cock to the point where even SP can't understand it. I don't know whether I'm being over charged or what. It's a complete and utter mess!

fcuk all that trivial stuff above. I nominate those two fcuking annoying bints in the nationwide advert. Stupid singing bastards. Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
I concur, what a fooking stupid advert and really irritating to boot. Those girls look about 20 - what's the likelihood of 20 year old girls about to buy a house and needing a mortgage?!
What-ever overpaid marketeer ever gave that the go-ahead should be fired (hopefully!).
I keep being sent a lot of job adverts for Nationwide, sounds like they have a huge staff turnover to me...

Every single Release Engineer I've recruited (turned over 10+) has been at nationwide and most go back when their time is up... A number of Project Managers I've recruited have done stints their too.
Their programmes of work are absolutely flippin' huge. Meant to be a good employer though.

Society being obsessed with establishing every demographic as a victim of some external influence or another, rather than focussing the mind on what really is important... the life choices that we make and then live by, the decisions that we have the option to take, and then bear the conseqence of. Too many people rely on circumstance, or others to make decisions for them, and then moan that the outcome isn't favourable. I think society needs to leave the victim status to those who are genuinely faced with something exceptional, rather than painting virtually every demographic as a poor soul living life in the face of adversity.
Sorry, I just watched the news again... must stop.

Greedy fooking bastards who go to any sort of a buffet and basically bring back enough food to feed the population of Camden and then waste 90% of it!
At the Holiday Inn Express near Portsmouth on Thursday morning through work. Some guy came back to his table with two plates of muffins, croissants (plain and choc), bread, sausages, bacon, eggs, etc. By the time he had finished and left the table looking like a bombsite there was still enough to feed a family of four there, just wasted!
WTF? Why do that?
On holiday it is even worse......
Such a bloody useless waste of food and so unnecessary. I hate these fooking pigs!
