Round 5 saw another double header this time at Pembrey. Some varied weather conditions were there to greet the drivers, the vast majority of whom were new to the circuit. This did not deter them from making the most of the weekend, with two Milltek rounds and the opportunity to race alongside the Kumho championship in two of their rounds as well.
Unfortunately the weekend did see a higher than normal number of retirements and incidents, some due to mechanical failures and others as a result of some very close racing! Despite the season beginning to draw to it’s conclusion, people were pushing hard as the points table still has a lot to play for. With the series leader, Alan Wileman missing form this event it meant that the other front runners had an opportunity to take the series lead, or at the very minimum close the gap ready for the final two circuits.
Saturday saw appalling weather conditions with heavy driving rain, standing water on the track and the associated spray. During qualifying Nigel Innes slid on the wet grass which ended with the touring having a slow speed roll onto it’s off side. Minimal damage was done although he did miss the first race. Simon Lambert took the checkered flag in the first race averaging just over 66 mph around the very wet circuit.
Sunday the conditions improved considerably so the drivers were on a dry track. In Sundays race Simon’s good fortune ended with mechanical issues forcing early retirement. This left the way clear for Craig Jamieson and Liam Crilly to battle for first, with Craig piping Liam to the line with a 3.87 second gap. The dry conditions saw an increase in lap times with Craig achieving a very impressive average speed of 71.89 mph. George Haynes also managed to get his name in the motoring press with his ‘drive of the day’. Starting from the back of the 19 car grid due to qualifying with a weight penalty, he managed to carve his way through the field over the next 14 laps to finish on the podium in third place.
