LOL, mine went this week too. Dealer wanted me to bring it in to ascertain it is the spring (the fact it was sitting in my hand seemed not to matter  ) then bring it back again again to get it warranty repaired. :( Bearing in mind I need it for Silverstone next week I just bought the bloody thing and AmD can fit it when they're finishing off the rest of the mods B) Its does make a racket though doesn't it :)

I've been driving without mine for a month or so. There's no free-play in the pedal, just a bit lighter. Makes sod all difference if you ask me.

Isn't there some kind of safety issue not having it?

Only the safety of not having that spring tw*t your leg when it snaps. I spoke to my dealer and they didn't seem to worry about it really (apart from not wanting to order the part in until I'd taken the car in for them to look at - despite me having the spring in front of me at the time). As far as I'm aware, it just gives a bit of weight to the pedal. I think that's the general opinion anyway. I've never heard anything to suggest otherwise. If there was freeplay in the pedal I'd be worried about putting extra wear on the clutch plates but that doesn't seem to be the case as it seems to return fully without the spring. Maybe <_<

They (the springs) are £3-95 each The last one I had creaked and lasted 1000 miles...Im a little more confident about the nice shiny uncreaky one thats on there now ;)

I had a Lancia MonteCarlo and boy did that have a mother of a spring. Sure my left thigh was bigger than my right. So far Ive driven through 3 of the little bleeders and the noise is just like a gon shot . Two on my Turbo and one on my previous NA. You would think there should be stronger springs available due to demand ?? Its tempting to do without but I prefer the haevier feel of "sprung" clutch. ;)

When mine went the first time Clutch pedal wouldn't return all the way and eventually sat flat on the floor , Dealer took it back as he thought it might be hydraulic problem but as far as I know it wasn't. Second time it went that didn't happen but they modded the bracket and I got a fat compensation cheque for all the aggro ;)

Had spring goe on my old NA. SO far the turbo one has held up to abuse but like everyone else I am waiting for it to happen. I thought the spring was there to protect the thrust bearing on the clutch. Be nice if someone from vauxhall/lotus could say if it has any true function other than adjusting the feel of the pedal. Any body connected. Mark M

Was that from the dealer or Vauxhall?

My folks have had their Astra Turbo in for a new gearbox under warranty after months of problems and unsuccessful patch-up jobs. They've also had paintwork issues and had bumpers resprayed - I'd be after a new bl00dy car but they got £50 meal vouchers :o  :9mm: :flame: :beat:

Oh and now electric guitars and lots of noise

Mine went at 6k and scared me stiff as I was scaring my father-in law in the passenger seat at the time. I found that getting into second gear when cold seemed a little more sticky without the spring but cured with new spring. Could have been pure psychosomatic on my part. :D

Is it possible to measure the pedal pressure with and without the spring  I've had two break on two cars and in both cases there appeared to be no difference in length of travel or pedal pressure. My latest spring has just started to creak so I'm changing into the brown pants

Just a quick note to say I put a bit of WD40 on the spring yesterday and the creaking has gone away - was really loud and annoying before. Not sure if it will increase the lifespan of the spring but we'll see.

Well, with all the aggro I had I ended up with a new front seat ( the fabric on the sides of the leather had torn ) when they took it back to the factory for a couple of months, Satnav system and 2K in my sky rocket. Mind you this was for a plethora of problems. They first offered a sports exhaust !! After they took it back I got the seat and Satnav, as I recall I got the 2K after I crapped my pants when the spring went 1st time having only had the car back 10 days and when I soiled another set of underwear a few weeks later I threatened to reject it.

It's a 2001 but probably most parts are more recent than that :D, only time I get trouble with it now is when I take it to Inchcape Vauxhall Exeter, they ain't getting their grubby mitts on it again.

Hey, another hello from France... First, to say that there is still no equivalent to the 03P24-06/2003 Vauxhall "technical note" for the timing chain in France... Looks like I'm really the only Speedster owner in France concerned by this :( And worse, I cannot find the original thread talking about this "recall", even using the search function using the reference above, or "timing chain" for that matter... Makes me uneasy... Second, to say that three days ago, the clutch pedal return spring has popped out from its place, and since then well no problem... Only that the spring doesn't creak anymore since it's not there anymore :D Otherwise no noticeable difference while driving, only that it's easier to push the clutch pedal in now. So far so good, next time I go to the garage (since one of the body panels has a breach on it) I'll have it put back in place along with the body panel changed if at all possible (well, it SHOULD be a warranty item anyway).

Threads on timing chains (In chronological order):

You may need to visit your dealer - Check your VIN numbers

Timing belt issue - found this on t'internet

Timing Chain Recall Repair At Crownhill

Timing Chain - rework not rerquired?

Timing chain recall - anyone notice the difference?

When using the search page remember that it defaults to 'Search posts from - last 30 days' and you might need to increase to 365 days or something, and depending on what forum you were looking at when you clicked search, you might need to change the 'Search in category' and 'Search in forum' fields to 'All'

Hope this helps

Yep my clutch return spring went today. This happened on the Isle of Wight run today - and Dave who was directly behind me heard the spring go from his car. (pretty loud!!) A little panic to begin with, but it seriously does not seem to make any difference to the weight of the clutch. BenW has been driving for a while without his and only complains about about the pedal wobbling/ vibrating. Don't think I will bother to replace it unless anyone advises otherwise..... Mike

...and mine went this morning whilst parking. It's a damn good job I had read this thread otherwise I would have required a change of underwear! It had lasted 6 weeks....ridiculous..... Ben
