I like them. poof

Look better if they're not vertical though...

Posted Image

Me too, problem is that if they don't go vertical the car must be even more difficult to get out of because the bottom bit is just where you attempt to get your foot over the sill without scratching the plush hand crafted trim. :D

So, are they going to do Back to the Future IV in a silver VX?

These so-called Lambo doors on a VX are, IMO:

– impractical

– of questionable stabilty

– adding weight

As the cars get cheaper, it will no doubt be more and more the case that they get chavved.

When will we see the first VX "professionally converted" into an F355, Gallardo or similar?

How much weight does this conversion add to the car?

im no expert but i cant see, unless they weigh loads which iirc they dont, that it would effect stability, as if this was the case, surely a driver sitting at the driver's side would make the car unstable?? or having stuff in the boot. i dont think it's that critical that it would make a noticable diference, unless someone can say otherwise? edit: that hummer looks toss

Think the point is stability of the open door, i.e will it strain the hinges/bend in the wind

ps gas struts with a 300lb rating.

How much does a vx door weigh??? you'd be pulled out of your seat by the thing

thats maybe so its easier to get out, just pull the door handle and hey presto you've been flung out an car and are stood/crushed on the floor 50 feet away!

Who was the guy that ended up in his car upside down at the bottom of a cliff? Don't think you could get out if the car was on it's roof. Obviously, this is something to be avoided anyway. :D

You don't need to open the door to get out of a turned-turtle VX. The doors on mine were against rocks on the drivers side, and exit through the passenger side window (the one visible in this pic – lhd don't forget) with the door closed was my route – the door top was blocked against rocks too.

Wasn't much space, as you can see – helps to be fairly trim if you want to emulate this trick  , but when you can smell petrol and you're trapped under the car, you are unusually motivated to get the fcuk out of it! :P

So, Lambo-style doors would not have made any difference.

Sorry about the pic quality – the garage took this when they recovered the car.

Perhaps if Speedy had installed the lambo doors with the 300lb per door rating pressure, he could have activated both simultaneously and the car would have flipped itself back over?

:P Nice idea, but doubt if I would have thought of that one at the time.

Sorry, I rather like them. And as for kits based on the VX or Elise I'd like to see a Porsche 917

or Jaguar XJR 8/9 Posted Image

But then if I wanted that - and afford it - I'd have an Ultima.

I'll have to join the team IN FAVOUR. I like them, look very good in a car like the VX. But look crap on regular cars. Shame that Price / Insurance / Hassle don't make it a good deal.

I think you'll find a member on the site actually bought some quite recently ( a bit cheaper than has been quoted) but there was all sorts of issues.

He really wanted to do this mod and did his research ( with a very similar thread ) before ordering, but had to admit defeat and sell them on.

Undoubtedly from the pictures it can be done but there are weight issues etc and the set up was far from perfect.

I like the idea of easier access but not sure if its the way to go :(
The VX already gets enough attention ;)
Time for some stirring :P

Now the gullwing hardtop that was in development is definately something I would have had, if it had reached production quality.

Will look for the link gullwing hardtops

Accessabilty while being discreet. More my style. (In a red claypso NA  )

Almost 10 years ago a friend and I decided to built door hinges that would enable my vx 220 to open the doors similar to the doors of a lamborghini countach. It was quite an adventure. My friend had a look at the basic door hinges and then started designing new modified ones with the help of a computer programme. Next his CNC lathe turned into reality what formerly only existed in a 3D version on the computer.

Then it was my turn to fractionize the original doors and hinges and exchange them with the new ones. As I`ve never done something like that before it took me 14 hours. But I did it! :-)

Here are some pictures of my car with the new door hinges.

I'll also add a link showing intructions how to replace the orignial door hinges with the new ones, we called V-doors. Although the instructions are in German, the pictures may give you a short overview how to replace the door hinges and, what is more, what the new door hinges look like.
