Then something is wrong with yours. I had a typhoon of warm air this morning! And i was actually thinking how nice it would be to have such a luxury in the vx. thumbsup

so you get half the economy, twice the tax, double the insurance, 50% depreciation over 3 years (call it 6.5k), servicing costs etc etc etc for what?

so the jones' next door are kept up with :beat:

my Dad hasn't got round to changing his car in over 10 years through one thing and another, he's got an aging merc much the same as his neighbours, who all drive ageing estates and hatchback of various makes. all live in mahoosive houses though. odd isn't it? if you go to any estate up and down the country people will be busily polishing their middle of the range hatchback  think it's all just for appearances sake. i could be wrong tho

or is that sleepy, shuffling off your mortal coil feeling just what driving a rover does to you?

Can I just say that I agree with AntB on his new car/housing estate theory. Where my parents live is on the coast on private road. Every single house is completely different shape and style to the ones either side, some of them are quite big and everyone has older cars. Not classics or bangers but just cars they bought new 6+ years ago and have never sold on. My parents have 3 mercs, the youngest of which is a 1992 model. The oldest is only 2 years younger than me (so my mum gets free car tax on it soon!). Our neighbours don't go quite that far but put it this way - if an audi tt or new mini drives past all the locals point at it. Bit old fashioned that neck of the woods. The only shed we have in the family is technically my dads 1983 Merc 380 SE. Complete with 202,000 miles on the clock. I used when the vx was being repaired earlier this year, but its a bit uneconomical to be a proper shed - approx 20 mpg.

I'm looking for some shedvice, I'm guessing you guys can help.. :) I'm beginning to think that shedding is a top idea, as even now the VX is pretty cold in the morning and the fogging up is bad already even with anti-fog on the windscreen :beat: I'd be looking at spending <£500, and running it maybe November through February, then selling it for not much of a loss. Something small, econimcal and basic. Any thoughts? Also, regarding insurance, do people go fully comp or tpft? There's some mention in my VX policy of driving any car and being covered tpft. Would that make sense? thumbsup

Insurance bit first: You are only covered tpft on your fully comp ins, ONLY on cars that are NOT yours, and some companies now limit that to ages 25 and above. So therefore recomend tpft: thumbsup Next: what shed? Well, look through this thread and see what people have chosen. I went for the very cheapest, which rather limited my choice. Ant and I had roughly they same thinking, although he had even less pride in that he went for a 5 door! he did chose a Turbo though, which in diesel shed land is good. Anyway, i digress. My thought process. Light hatchback: lots and lots Diesel for economy: a few less, 106, clio, fiesta, corsa, etc cheap £500: 106, corsa, fiesta <1.6 to fit into low tax band: 106, Corsa. 106s renound for blowing head gaskets a lot so i chose the corsa. I paid £300 for 1997, 1.5D, 109k miles white 3 door corsa. it costs £234 a year to insure (23yoa), and returns 65mpg average MOT £44, full service for £30. It is dreadfully slow, goes round corners on its door handles, but it is comfortable, warm, it demists, costs virtually nothing and keeps the vx in the warm in the garage ready for the sun...

i'm no expert but i doubt you'd be covered. the saving you make on your reduced mileage will pay for the shed's insurance. last time i spoke to an insurer about the driving other vehicles bit they said it was in emergency type circumstances, not for general use.

yes. they are also iirc built to automatically fold into the shape of an inescapable coffin in the event of contact with anything else

Hmm.. I guess that would be the case for most tiny little old cars.. Is that something that you've heard Ant, or is it what you expect? Ignoring the tin foil construction and the shoebox size  It's cheap as chips with fairly low mileage..

iirc the cinquecento was released around the time that the ncap tests seem to become everyone's bible as to what constituted a good car. they did REALLY badly, got the same type of drubbing as the metro/ rover 100 if memory serves. seem like handy little cars, just wouldn't want to come up against anyone in one. might be worth searching on how it did rating wise if you are that way inclined. seicento also may be worth a check in that respect

One month until i part company with the VX and enter the world of shed-dom. Undecided so far, but it'll probably be either a micra or corsa. I couldn't get the insurance for much less than £180, so I guess there is just a baseline where it costs x amount to insure any car regardless of how shite it is
