should of got involved with this last year - wasnt planning to still be at same company for 9 months @100 miles a day
On a plus point, rover is still going strong
- MOT due in a month.
What mpg are you getting? And how much is a gallon costing given your mix? Rover returns 43mpg, so about 10ppm, or £51per week
I get 65 from the corsa on dinodiesel (forcourt)
and 60 from it on veg unless i use the motorway in which case it can go down to around 50
Veg oil has a lower calorific value than dinodiesel so you would probably find that you use a little more. Ant seems to use more veg than dino too, and he does a lot of motorway miles.
Anyway,
In the summer we can run on 100% veg. Idle is a little lumpy until warm. I cut it with 5% pertrol. The reason for this is that it is thought that the petrol cleans the build up of cooling veg fat on the injectors which happens when the car is turned off.
In the winter and bellow 10 degrees you have to increase the amount of petrol you cut it with to thin the veg.
so costs:
the 5% petrol is negligable.
so in the summer 51p per litre = £2.31 per gallon. at 55mpg (the lower one) equates to 4.2p per mile. i think mine actually costs a little less.
in the winter. running at 10-15% petrol
a litre will cost you 55.9p =4.6p per mile.
As i think i mentioned in another thread, in a moment of bordom the other day i worked that if you take everything into account (buy price, tax, ins, service, tyres etc etc etc) my vx comes out at £1.95 a mile and the corsa comes in a frankly absurd 6.4p per mile. And the corsa can't depreciate. Infact i could double my money tomorrow so it is apreciating.
ps just to add. It would save you £29.5 per week or 1,538 quid a year cheeky. As Ant says, the savings actually (will) allow us to run the vx (insurance, tax, service, MOT, tyres) equivalent to FOC.

bargain

cheeky, bin the rover and get a corsa. i never thought i'd say this, but you won't regret it

just come back from london in the corsa (meetings all day), the corsa is an excellent london car, nippy, and i couldn't give a fcuk about it.... some tw@t in an hgv cut my up a couple of weeks ago and i had two think twice about braking, i actually thought i'd just let him run into me

edit: listen to James, he knows what he's talking about, he should, i told him it all

Try buying a corsa td, but its so rare on the market, so what the other cars can be a vegetarian without mods or breaking bank??

any of the xu engined pugs/ citroens are a good start, these all have tough bosch injection pumps.
the 1.5d 106 is a delicate little engine with a weak lucas/ cav type pump

alternatively an astra/ chavalier 1.7d/ 1.7td is a safe bet
alternatively, if you're feeling flush a merc 190 2.5/ 2.5td will be bulletproof, or an e300d if you're feeling VERY well off

the merc engine is the best for veg. the w115 model derivative is SERIOUSLY sought after because of this. basically any merc that says "diesel" or "turbodiesel" on the back from the 80s is a surefire hit, anything PRE- cdi engine

best keep looking on fleabay. the diesel corsas come up in fits and starts, sometimes there are loads on, other times none, or overpriced rubbish. a good look after a car advert 5p listing day is a good place to start

Does that include the 190D 2.0 as well as the 2.5? I've seen a couple of those going for the type of money I'd get for my Punto. Quite fancy an old merc after seeing fluffy's, although it'll depend on the insurance quote.

Hmmm. £120 a month is a healthy saving! But still in the same position - I want to leave current job to be closer to home. I am starting a business with some colleagues - can you be a director and look professional driving a shed to meetings?

includes that

any idi merc is fine, the two litre has problems dragging the 190's (not insubstantial) body along though iirc

the 2.5td is best for motorway miles, if you're worried about appearances, get an e300d, the engine's a peach
