my rev counter is jerking backwards and forwards all over the place, from 0 to 5000 rpm when it's at its worst. anyone any idea why? is it a slipping belt? how long will it take James Gray to fix it for me? :poke: :P

yep same symptoms as i had, slipping belt (alternator belt), may as well replace both as you have to remove one to get to the other, oh and what a pita of a job it is, im still not happy with mine, but it seems to be working ok for now. Itll take about 30 mins or so, unless everythings jammed up, and about 7-8quid of parts. fingers crossed for the Mot cheeky_chops :D

bo11ocks. i bloody changed the belt when i did the cambelt. i'm guessing the battery will be ok as the charging light hasn't come on. James, are you going to be around later? i don't suppose that you could help me sort it out as i'm off to london for a meeting tonight, i could pop in half way? else i'll have to use the vx, whcih i don't like doing for commuting :(

can you see/tell if the belt is slack at all - check the tension ? i found getting these tight was a lot more difficult than it should've been

just checked at lunch. there was 45 degrees rotation in one direction (good) when i twisted the belt one way and nearer 90 degress rotation (bad) when i twisted it t'other. erratic speedo shenanigans have stopped as well, very odd. will tighten it up properly when i get it home. it's only got 5k miles on the belt so it should be fine

Ant, just seen this. Doesn't sound like an alternator belt to me. A loose belt would cause the tacometer to drop a reading but wouldn't cause a spike. so unless you were actually doing 5k rpm at the time then i don't think that's where the problem is. That said i have had the loose belt sindrome and as the tacometer pick up is from the alternator then you will get odd readings. Its possible that your alternator had blown a winding or that one of the bushes has worn out, which would cause spikes as you mentioned. I've not yet been into a corsa alternator but as everything else it is possible to repair them. In the meantime if it has fixed itself then all the better. Finnally there are so few electronics on these corsas that dying alternator spikes haven't got much to upset, unlike most 'modern' cars. Shall we have dinner in you know where next week? TT? thumbsup

I've been reminded - What is the criteria for a car to be considered a 'shed'?

handbrake was glued on this am. i'm blamming it on the crap weather. I'm glad the vx has a garage (and a cosy cover  ) I'm nearly out of veg oil. Tescos has been crap recently and i've only been able to buy 4 or 5 plastic cans. I don't like the metal ones because the recycling men don't take them away. by the way i've given up on the mixing with a bit of petrol, 100% veg now. Its not overly happy on start up, but as soon as its warm it runs like a dream Ant, at what temperature do i really have to add a bit of petrol? :) Coldest these past few days as been ITRO 12 degrees C.
