That's exactly how it came across in your thread. It was good to keep up with it! It was almost like watching and Episode of Wheeler Dealers on that Sky channel, if you've seen it.

One of the main reasons I want to learn is that I've been in the motor trade for five years now, and I'm fed up of all the boys in the workshop taking the mick out of my mechanical skills!

I've had all sorts of cars over the last few years, really want to learn a bit more than I should. I've been very grateful for my RAC membership a few times. I've been interested in reading yours and Ant's foray into Veg Oil!! Sounds like you'll have the M1 to yourself if the mooted fuel protests go ahead.

Wow mate! That looks like a lot of fun! I bet you'd get quite a bit more than £520 on E-bay if you did put it on. Imagine all of the 4x4's bidding on that! Interesting choice of Shed. Is it a deisel?

thanks mate no its a little 1.6 16v be fun in the snow going down the hill to work rallly

completely missed replying to this thread about where to start motors- wise. i'd recommend a mini, cheap, loads been written on them (vizards book is amazing) and working on something as confined as that will be slightly in at the deep end, but rewarding in retrospect.

researching why the a- series is designed as a long stroking powerplant laid out as it is will also teach you loads about engine evolution.

if not any rwd bmc/ ford will teach you just as well thumbsup

I've been interested in reading yours and Ant's foray into Veg Oil!!

nice of you to say as much :)

if buying an ancient and fcuked morris traveller at the age of 16 and an ancient and fcuked house at the age of 26 has taught me anything, it's that whilst it's a total b1tch and massively soul destroying at the time, doing something yourself the hard, cold and miserable way is its own reward in the end.

another plus is that i am now able to help out my family as well with motoring/ construction problems, saving them time, stress and money :)

the veg oil thing has been the same. a LOT of research has gone into it all, but, with any luck, this time next year i will be driving (or should that be 'drifting') to work and back in a pampering, executive motor for free (with the exception of tax and insurance :) )

*sits in recarpetted, completely refurbished and updated house with new electrics, plumbing and heating and vx in the garage for minimal outlay*

[off topic]

the place is looking amazing btw JG, you and Katy will have to come round for dinner one evening. many, many thanks for your help :) Imnotworthy thumbsup

yup, with the exception of the kitchen and works to the garage/ doing up the garden. thumbsup the little lady is packing her shoes and handbags up to move in even as i type :D

popped to the bank the other day to get them to give me a better rate on my mortgage, got that sorted and the guy nearly wet himself with excitement when he discovered that we'll be looking to buy a second (better, nicer area etc) place in sixth- nine months

funny isn't it, the bloody banks don't want to lend anything to you to start with and then when you've done all the hard work they're your best friend when you want to buy another house  :beat:

Shed experts - is this a good deal? What might I have to watch out for? Very reliable automatic 1.6L Peugeot 205 (1996). Only 34,000 on the clock. Silver 5 door. Radio cassette player, central locking, sunroof, and electric windows. 2 lady owners. Recently fully serviced (Nov 07) and taxed up to Nov 08. £530 which covers the cost of its last service, all parts and the vehicle tax, to anyone in the office or family member.

Yes, FSH, owned by old lady on IOM, sold on to my colleague last year, so hasn't travelled far! Low mileage is quite normal over here, as you can imagine

So are salty roads i would have thought. So look out for rust especially on a 205. I would say condition dependant thats not an unfair price. Its not goign to be paticularly cheap to run given its a 1.6 auto but since its not going to go very far, that might not be a primary concern.

the diesel pug 106 is a 1.4. Ant is the expert on these i know little about them other than the fact that, as you say, you need the bosch pump. I seem to remember him saying something about 1995 onwards but don't quote me. Other than that, with the bosch a perfect car for going vegging.

the late pug 106 with an engine code to punch in immobiliser *sometimes* had a bosch pump, generally they are lucas though. i managed to get 70mpg- ish out of the 1.4 that i had although they are slooooooooooooooooooow. if you can find a slower weasel i'd be astonished!

as for pump identification try:

www.doctordiesel.co.uk/

the 205 diesels got about 45mpg and are bosch pumps on a 1.8 indirect (do still check the pump though). i know you looked at a 1.6 petrol, but the diesel 205s go on forever and you can veg them, with a 106 you will more than likely have to rely on how miserly they are with fuel and run dinodiesel :(

iirc the pumps are on the front (radiator) side of the engine
