Do you know if the 1.7cdti are direct injection?
I fancy a slightly larger car for karting house stuff around. I thought an astra estate might work ok. Was the old vertra estate diesel a direct or not?

My first post in this thread :( & possibly my last :P , the 1.7cdti is the bang up to date common rail direct injection engine James, the di & dti's are direct injection too. IIRC the only engine that would suit vo is the old 1.7 that featured in the Vectra B (the original Vectra in the UK) for less than 12 months when the car was 1st launched & replaced by the 2.0di before the estate was released for sale.

Just to add that my boss has just bought a 91/92 Mini Neon, 1 elderly lady owner since new with 32000 miles on the clock, in vgc for £400. Now that is a proper shed, unfortunately he's going to wrap it up & stick it in his 'barn'. If only I'd got there first  .

pedro, please, please, PLEASE(!) check the pump before throwing veg in it!! mercedes used a special randomiser to decide which models got boschs. generally the 2.5s are bosch, with the 2.2s generally being lucas, but with manufacturers spec patterns you always need to check to be 100% sure.

my shed is currently suffering from the following problems:

air leak in the fuel lines reducing performance even further
heater doesn't work (i assume the matrix is full of silt)
clutch is shot
rev counter issues
it's still a corsa

i dream of upgrading to a merc *sighs*

Cheers Ant, you sound like an expert on all this, not sure if that's a good thing ;) ...

I found something with Bosch written on in the engine bay, unfortunately it was the ABS. Trying to a) locate the fuel pump and B) find a label on it under 190,000 miles of road dirt is fairly tricky...

In other shed news, my V5 came through today. That private plate, I've been offered £400 for it off regtransfers.co.uk which implies it's worth more than that. Even if I sold it for £400, that makes the shed outlay currently £850 + £20 (oil) + £99 tax - £400 = £569 = result!

I've just been offered a 2000 Passat TDI, 4 door, in silver, 60k with full history for £500 (good friends just wants it off the drive as just bought new BMW 120). I don't really need a shed but it's too good to miss so I'll get it and sell my Freelander TD4. At £500 I don't mind putting veg oil in it. Joss - did you find a local supplier?

you will mind if it's a common rail as you'll kill it. check what your coloured 'tdi' letters mean. in the very old days it just meant it was a turbo diesel, as they went red and blue it meant different variations of tune and whether or not the engine was direct injection. you have been warned ;)

some vws (dependent on engine arrangement) also have a type of 'lamda' sensor in the tank that measures fuel viscosity, shutting the whole thing down if it's too thick. please check before you botch your car

:o yes I will do plenty of research before cocking it up. I have read of someone running a 1999 110bhp Passat on 50/50 with no mods and no problems, I'll keep searching for more info.

I don't drive that many miles so I'm not going to rush into it. It's more of a "project" than a need to save money so the research is the fun bit.

another service for the shed this week end. the last was less than 2 months ago  Lucky it only costs £15-18 and takes 30min or so. 5000 miles service intervals are a bot of a pain, but if it keeps it going i'm not going to complain thumbsup

update: I have just been offered a Citroen BX diesel estate, 40k on the clock, for nowt! only drawback is it has been sat in the garage for a year - apart from a flat battery, anything else to check out specific to a diesel engine? Does it go off like petrol?

Joss, afaik old diesel is fine, it doesn't turn to jelly like petrol. the only problem you can get with diesel is growth on its surface, this is algae and like all organisms which breath the way algae does it produces water, which will obviously settle at the bottom of the tank and can damage the pump if ingested by it. top tip: dip the tank with a dipstick wrapped in something that will absorb some of the diesel. if the diesel is red when it comes out it has algae growing on it. algae needs daylight to grow though, so i very much doubt that your bx tank has any in it, you'd notice the hole in the top of it letting the daylight in for a start! :D other than that it should be fine, do all the usual checks you'd do to a vehicle that's been left standing, tyres, rubber fuel and brake lines etc and you'll be good to go! :D oh, check the diesel pump ;)

forgot to say, the beauty of old, basic diesel engines is that they can run on anything which has enough energy in it to 'fire' off. heating oil, diesel, veg oil, liquified fat, waste engine oil (NEVER try this) will all go in and get combusted. you just need to make sure the pump can take it :)

Well I picked up my new "shed" yesterday and it's better than I'd hoped!

Posted Image

It's a 2001 TDI 130bhp with 68k and full history. It was serviced in Sept and with 2 new tyres on the front.

For the grand sum of ............. £100!
I felt so guilty I gave them the cash and a bottle of Champagne when I picked it up.

To be fair it hasn't been used for the past month as it was leaking water in so badly that mould was growing on the seats..... :o
I spent 2 hours yesterday cleaning it and all this morning fixing all the leaks and now it's looking very respectable.

I had planned on using SVO 50/50 but as it's a 130bhp PD I don't think I'll risk it for now.
Plus I haven't found any place here selling Veg Oil less than diesel yet!

Driving it home I was well chuffed as it goes like a rocket (but handles like a boat), so far it's looking like a right bargain (which makes a change).

chinky chinky

Looking for a list of cars that will run on straight veggie oil without any mechanical issues, does anyone know what cars will run on this without any problems - what about the citroen ax (real pig but cheap) I would troll through this - but it is sooo long. Thanks in advance.

:o that is stupidly cheap! Thats a good £4000 - £5000 worth of car!! Why were they willing to just give away that amount of money?
