as diesels work off the heat from the compression cycle to fire they'll always start if there's 1- fuel 2- enough power to get the heat in the cylinders to fire the diesel. how long have you turned it over for and is it trying to start and then giving up? just keep winding it over (if necessary until the battery goes flat). if it starts running that should clear it out enough to get it back to life. otherwise it could be a number of things, including the injector nozzles being past it, at which point 'free' becomes less so ;)

Update on my free shed: it is a ZX 1.9D, not a BX (boss didn't know the difference!)
Bit depressing as I fancied another angular plastic style icon on my drive...

Anyway, I can't start it. Charged battery up, electrics work, tries to turn over, plug light comes on and goes off, but no ignition.

As I know nothing about diesels (except that they don't use sparks!), I am lost. I need some help to analyse the problem before deciding whether to spend money (and what on).

Bump starting is I guess a no-no.

Anyone?

I'd start with fuel, check fuel pump is running, filter is not blocked etc.
Has it been standing for a long time?

Joss, if you need a hand at the weekend let me know. I can come and have a look, I don't know diesels that well but happy to go through the basics.

Doug

Yes it has been sat in a garage for two years!

The fuel primer bulb looks ok, and pressures up ok, the lines don't appear perished, but I haven't looked at the pump. I need to find a diagram so I know what I'm looking at.

I am off island this w/e Doug, but I may yet call on you! The car is still in its garage in Ramsey...

A friend who owns the same Corsa (except the 1.2 petrol) as you lot use for vegging has just giving me a ring because he has noticed a petrol leak. He says its on the drivers side, so the same side as the petrol tank, but a bit further towards the front. I was just wondering if any of you would know anything about this or is the diesel completely different? He also said that the patch dried up when the car isn't used which would suggest its maybe a leak in a pipe rather than the tank itself, or am I talking complete twaddle? Any help would be greatly appreciated chinky chinky

Introducing my shed. It's an X plate Mondeo 1.8 Zetec which I got for £900. She runs beautifully and can even do lift off oversteer if you're in the mood. :)

There seems to be a lot of sheds in 'other models and brands' at the moment. A sign of the times perhaps. I suddenly realised today that i've got rather used to cheap motoring, so much so that i think i might have priced my way out of a 'mormal' car for a while.

i am burning veg oil at an alarming rate at the moment. I currently have 400L worth of cans lying around in the car port. am looking forward to someone fixing this veg oil crisis though. 65p a litre is starting to get a bit silly now. forcourt people are moaning at 20% increases, we've had over 30! :P :P :P :P still, £20 to fill up isn't too bad i suppose. Did anyone see the veg recycling plant for the home user on fith gear the other night? £2k! oh so that makes it worth while then. Better still, it needs a source of electricity :beat:

was that the fuelpod James? they've gone up in price A LOT. they were about £900, now they're £2k as you say :beat: exploiting the rise in fuel methinks. all they are is a well packaged biodiesel reactor, you still have to titrate etc, so they're not foolproof. svo in tesco is now 80p+ a litre with the 10l cubees going for £9.75 each! :o currently getting myself sorted with a wvo supply. the shed will hit 170k miles tomorrow :)
