I too have joined the sheds-r-us brigade - needed something that can do 30k miles in the next 6 months so went to the auction last week and picked up a 54 plate Vectra Elite with 120k on the clock for £1800 - its got leather, sat nav the lot and drives well for a car thats done 120k miles! Not quite as quick as the VX, but it is a vauxhall!

Unfortunately its the 1.8 petrol and needs a bit of a heavy foot as as it doesn't have too much power. There are quite a few marks on it but for comforts its exactly what I need to do a lot of motorway miles in the next few months.

I was really surprised at how low the prices were at the auction for all kinds of cars - will definitely be going back there when i need to replace this one.

You wouldn't belive the price of the vectra's with the z22se engine, even X reg ones are less then £1k.

My new job means I'll be on the train every day so don't need an 40+ mpg shed anymore, so I've been thinking of getting a development mule ;).

Just bought my new shed; Fiat Punto Sporting 1.2 16v. Looks ok, only 60k miles which isnt bad at all for a 1998 model! Bargain at £700 :) especially knowing it has electric everything and power steering.

I am considering a very temporary shed for a couple of weeks. If it breaks down I can just get it towed to the scrap yard. A 1996 P-reg Kia Pride! 127k and one lady owner from new. Should be (very) cheap. Anyone got any advice on whether this car will last two more weeks?!

How long is a piece of string??! A recent MOT is a good starting point, servicing too. How much is it? And do you know the seller??

Haha, thanks TT! It would be the lowest of the low! It has an MOT for a few months (May 09), and has some history. It is a Trade deal and would be double figures, i.e: under £100! Can't really go wrong for that. Oh, and it is white, with a hand-painted boot-lid, in gloss!

I'm seriously starting to get shed jealousy.

Can someone please explain why I am teetering on the edge of actually wanting to own a sub-£250 car and spend practically nothing on it for an entire year bar unknown brand tyres and MOT?

Ahh, JG makes it all seem so glamerous!!!

Near impossible on a sub £250 car!! They always require something - HGF ( ), cambelts, leaks, wipers, brakes, trim falling off!! And AC/EW/PAS/CL are all luxuries, even windows sometimes! :P

How fooked up is this? - mine has appreciated in value since i bought it 3 years ago!! Cost £350, just after the Rover collapse. Had a HG, cambelt, waterpump, thermostat, fluids (£380 all in) fitted 9 months ago and been looked after by me (servicing, cheap stereo, branded tyres, wipers). 10months MOT/tax, i reckon its worth £600+ in the current climate! :D :D

:D :D

You can do it!

I doubled my money (yes appreciation!) over one year and 30,000 miles.
Paid £225, sold for £500 (taxless) cost about 4p a mile to run on veg oil. The only thing i did to it was replace the radiator (£50) to sell it ( didn't really need it, but i didn't mind topping it up once a week)
I miss it, although i know where it lives, so visit occasionally   (No, its true)

I miss proper shedding.
Although am loving the volvo :)

Went up to Liverpool on business yesterday and got delayed in the remnants of this http://news.bbc.co.u...and/7683001.stm

So sad... RIP :( :(

Spoke to the missus and its the end of the shed - going to upgrade to something more substantial (saab, merc, volvo estate). I get the feeling an 11 year old rover 214 would collapse like a tin of beans in any kind of accident. This tragedy focus's the mind.... :(

I have to say that this was the reason i got rid of the shed. I saw a couple in accidents and they were not pretty sights.

I chose a Volvo estate for all sorts of other reasons too, space, economy (still getting 45mpg without trying) the fact i know them well (volvo family). Knowing that it might make the difference in that sort of instance is reasuring.

I am very proud of myself - changed all the glowplugs on my citroen yesterday! I had heard horror stories about accessibility of plug no4 but it was OK. Maybe its my small hands...
