I bought a cheapish pressure washer last week and used it for the first time yesterday. I have to say, fantastic, it cleared the gunk off first, then rinsed brill, but the bosch wax stuff the foams on and the rinses off is amazing! No polishing just a quick shamy down and sparkle sparkle she is a beaut! Highly recommend the Aqua 100 from Bosch, £80 I think from Home Base. Cw PS, the windows only leaked in two places as well, well chuffed!

I've used a pressure washer on my VX since I got it - It is brilliant at getting into awkward places and getting the wheels clean. Be careful though on my wifes car I took the paint off the bumper (Bl**dy Mercs!). ;) Kieran

what do you guys clean your wheels with ? I normally just shampoo and leave - but now starting to notice pitting and stubbon specks (hot brake dust ?) Do any of the branded alloy wheel cleaners work/make a difference ? thanks Mick

I've always used Wonder Wheels, and I find it to be top notch. You have to be very careful though. If the lacquer is chipped then don't get the Wonder Wheels on that area - it causes some white corrosion to form on the surface. For good wheels though, it's the best.

I agree Pip, just done mine ready for tomorrow. In fact I use the wash and the tyre dressing from Wonder Wheels as well. Worth the money in my mind. Cw

I had a problem with WW on the VX last year, basically after cleaning the wheels it left a lot of cloudy patches over the alloys, I had to get the alloys lightly compounded by a valeter to improve the blemishes but even now there still not 100%. I have used WW for the last 3 years and have never had any probs with it up until last year? I sent the bottle back to the makers to analyse it incase it was a dodgy batch with pics of the wheels but they wrote back to me saying was within the strength content and gave me a freebie car cleaning pack worth about £20. Careful with Wonder Wheels - it acid and will take the laquer off if you use it too often. I use the same stuff I use on my mountain bike called Muck off (bright pink fluid) which is brillaint and won't damage the wheel at all.

I think I read in the manual that a pressure washer shouldn't be used. I agree with the WW comments. I've played around with a few solvents but not found anything as effective as some of the proprietary brands. :( YET

I’m strictly buckets and sponge. Pressure washers are good for wheel arches but never on the body work.

what’s everyone else using?

Only used my Karcher pressure washer once on a car, my old, brilliant Subaru Legacy Turbo, it took small bits of paint off the door handles and various other bits of plastic trim, never touched a car with it again!  These days it's a bucket of suds, hosepipe to rinse and a chammy.

For a decent few hours work on it...

Autofinesse Avalache Snow Foam

Rinse and wash with Gyeon Bathe+

Bilt Hamber Korroso to get at contaminants

Clay Mitt to work away at the more affected areas

Another rinse down

Various polishes but have worked a fair bit using Scholl Concepts stuff lately which has few fillers in unlike cheap AutoGlym crap

+ Light machine polish once a year to work back swirls Scholl Concepts 20 is my preferred at the moment

Gyeon paint cleanser to prepare for protection layer

Soft99 or Victoria Concourse hard waxes depending on my mood

For the wheels Bilt Hamber Auto Wheel to get at contaminants and just use the normal Gyeon Bathe+ wash with a dedicated wheel mitt to prevent cross contamination. Twice a year put on GTechniq Wheel Armour which does an amazing job of pushing the brake dust away, the brake dust can then be rinsed off with a wash mitt and car shampoo instead of relying on any harsh dedicated wheel cleaner.

...am I taking this all a bit too seriously?

...I must admit, I love cleaning my cars
