Got a noise that a 'think' was not there before... Sounds kinda like tappets - tick, tick, tick, tick... speed of ticks goes up with revs, car fine underwise. Has correct amount of oil in... Should I be worried? What to do? Tom (Its a tubby by the way)

if its a very *light* ticking sound, have you checked the alternator belt as this sounds fairly similar if its breaking down and catching on the cover when running

Its a well know problem with the accessory / alternator belt.. Characterized by a ticking that increases with engine speed..
It the 2.0 turbo engine, it has an in built fault. The accessory pulley is 3mm out of line and leads to wear of the belt.. It starts with ticking (as explained above) and can in the worst possible case end up with it lunching the cam belt and the pistons having an unscheduled meeting with the valves: Meaning very very big bill to fix and you without your VX for a long time in thislovley weather.

Don’t drive it.. Ring the AA and get it to somewhere to get it fixed. If its out of warranty I would push for Vauxhall to pay for it as there is a known fix for it: I think it’s a new pulley bracket.

there a a few more if you search for "ticking"

Nope

for the reasons detailled above. Any ticking from engine (that matches engine frequency) means that something isn't right. The fact that there are known problems with the alternator belt shedding and taking the timming belt with it, is a fairly good indication that you should not drive it.

[/over exagering posts off] I drove mine for most of the winter ticking. Book it in at a dealer when you get a chance, its a known issue. There is a *small* chance it could give way and fcuk up the engine.

I've had a light ticking noise at tick over (turbo) for ages (well over a year). I dont always hear it. Probably something to do with the alternator belt. Last time I had feelies there seemed nothing untoward. Has not got any worst so not too worried. Maybe its time for another check. So Tomcoombs check the alternator belt condition , easy enough to do. In the old days you would be thinking tappets. As far as I know a broken cambelt could lunch the engine, not an alternator belt??

You're right, but on the VX, when the alternator belt breaks it has a nasty habit of taking out the cambelt at the same time, hence the warning. thumbsup

could also be sheared rivets in the exhaust manifold - not serious but should be repaired if you're still covered by warrenty.

Seriously though. Described as 'rattling like GTA' means its probably pretty bloody loud. Heard of a few vxts blow their engines now. Why take the risk?

Wrong thread (oops)!! The verdict. Vauxhall recon its not the belt, its from the "tappet" area of the engine. And want the take the top off the engine (3 hours labour at £70 + vat!!) to investigate. As it's not the belt, I am happier that it will not blow up! But still worried. Thorney - You still booked up for months? What would an oil change and a quick ear over this sound set me back at TMS?
