The only thing that winning this competition will prove is how many people you know and can persuade to vote in this sad little competition. "Baby of the year" = "Baby whose parents have the most friends who like mobile phone voting" Wow, I can't believe this award isn't ranked up there alongside the Nobel prize  And before anyone starts arguing.... ALL parents proud of their children. This means you parents are no different to any other parents. You are also blind to any faults that your children may or may not have. You think your child is the best thing ever, but that doesn't mean you have to show it off to the world at every opportunity. Parents love their children, you don't have to prove it every second of the day. "Wayne" or "Chardonnay" doesn't have to have the most fashionable clothes or the most expensive presents. If they do, you're probably just using them as a means to show how wealthy you think you are. "Bling" is not a good thing. Also, anyone entering this competition isn't doing the best for their child, they just want everyone else who has entered to see they themselves are doing something as well. It's a showing off thing, not a "wanting the best for my child" thing. If any parent wanted the best for their child, they wouldn't expose them to this ridiculous competition. They would take all the money they are spending (on texts and calls to others to vote) and put it into a savings account for their child to help them gain the best education possible. The best parents are those that educate their child as much as possible. Presents break, clothes wear out, hair cuts go out of fashion...an education lasts a lifetime. You may now argue because I'd love to see your rebuttals  ...and breathe :D

As a follow up to my post...

This country is full of people who want others to see them as successful. They don't have to be successful, as long as they are seen to be successful.

This has bred the "Cult of Celebrity". People famous for being famous. They have no innate talent, ability or skill other than being a human bling machine. People who want to be famous, now. A shortcut to wealth that they don't need to do the groundwork for.

Welcome to the "I want it now" generation. We have more disposable income now than at any other time in the past. Everyone wants to show how wealthy they are. The media (TV and tabloid newspapers mainly) feed this by creating worthless "celebrities", which sets them up as role models for the upcoming generation.

These celebrities need to stay famous as that is there only means of support. They do more and more outrageous things to maintain there position. Our children (and younger adults) are mimicking them as best they can. Celebrities wear jewellery to "show" how wealthy they are. This leads to youngsters wanting to wear more jewellery, unfortunately they can't afford stylish things so "bling" is born. Shiny stuff bought to appeal to their peers that is cheap and nasty to everyone else.

Can't afford a nice car? Buy a shopping car and bling it up. Add ridiculous alloys and stupid body-kits in a vain attempt to make it look better than it is. It's like the jewellery, it's cheap and nasty. One day you may grow up and realise it, but that's not guaranteed.

Unfortunately, money can't buy taste or style. It's the difference between "new money" and "old money". I'd rather try to afford a Ferrari and fail, than buy a replica.

I don't dress in expensive clothes, I don't drive an expensive car, my house is ordinary. I don't have a stupidly loud ringtone just so I can show everyone within 50 yards I have friends...my phone remains on "silent". I earn a fair wage which makes me comfortable. The last thing I want to do is advertise to the world that I'm better off than someone else. I do what I do because I want to, I don't need other people to see me doing it to make it worthwhile.
