I have seen both sides...

I know of a child that was left alone from the start, not stimulated, not taught, not helped. They are now just about to start school and can't read, write or even finish a simple jigsaw. The parents are oblivious to this.

Conversely, my niece who is 3 has started to read and write, can do jigsaws, use a computer (yes, really  ), etc. etc. She was stimulated from day one. Brain development starts when a baby recognises faces and expressions, detects movement, etc. Her parents learned of this and put it into practice and the difference between the two children is incredible.

You talk about people trying to be something they arent, how parents think their little angel is the best in the world and then big up your neice so everyone thinks she is some amazing child protege  I would go as far as to say a child that can read and write before they go to school has missed out on something far more precious they will never get back - play and fun - they are not machines.

I also note your comment on the poor child that is just "about to start school" and cant read - would that be in 10 months time? i have a 4 year old who has just started school and a 3 year old still at nursery PT. They both went to the same nursery part time and loved it, they follow the OFSTED curriculum and the older one wasnt exposed to significant reading or writing lessons. Also at school children dont start to "read and write", nowadays they do phonetics. They also all use computers/interactive white boards even at nursery and my son is more than capable of getting around the cbeebies website. The younger one is too busy playing to worry about mice and the web. They dont have TV's in their room, and the only reason i let them play on the Wii occasionally is its excellent for hand/eye coordination

By the sound of it you dont even have children?

Anyway, i feel its a bit of fun (not my thing) and i am sure for plenty of people when life is so drudgingly hard, hand to mouth, their child is the shining diamond in their life, its one thing that brings a smile to their and their families faces. And her pics on the net? So what? 95% of abuse occurs from people you know and trust not randon nutters on the web

PP I thought the responses from fellow forum members were out of order, and I was disappointed for you. The fact that this is thinly disguised facade for a cheap money grabbing excercise then it should be offensive to you as a parent entering your child into such a contest in the first place and also secondly to us for being asked to vote. You should of made it clear that there was a prize and the cost of voting. I am sure you are a proud parent and I wish you all the best but I hope you can understand the reaction to some extent.
