Still looking to get a kit car.

What is the best type to go for? this is what I need:

1.) Cheapish Tax
2.) Cheapish Parts
3.) Fairly Reliable
4.) Easy to tinker with :)
5.) Half decent engine
6.) Under £6k

I am thinking something like this:

Was going to say Tiger Avon, i have been thinking about getting one too. That one looks spot on, although it may be worth speaking to a few people on some of the kit car forums thumbsup

Check the tax i dont think it will be as bad as you think, a bike engine would obviously be cheaper but will probably not have a reverse gear! Just something to consider.

if you are buying a 7 style car join one of the forums and take someone along to view the car with you who has built one themselves if you can, the problem with kit cars is that it all comes down to the builders capabilities which can vary massively. If i was to buy another westfield i would go for a bike engined one i think they would be a lot of fun thumbsup

BHP would probably be about 160 give or take, 0-60 maybe 4 - 5 secs, personally i would not buy another car with carbs, try and get throttle bodies if you can as the carbs are so difficult to set up.

Ok but I think TB's are going to put the car out of my budget.

Thats what I was thinking along the lines of performance :)

Looks good Paul.

Me and few mates are thinking of buying a 7 or a Westy between us for trackdays and sharing throughout the year.
looks like you're the man to talk to, when we're making the decision.

Sorry for the slight Hijack!

I'd recommend the Tiger range (having just sold my supercat). I'd avoid anything with a pinto heavy, old technology :), and bike engines arent for everyone - great for track work not that practical on the road imho.

Tax will depend on the plate it's got - registered as the donor reg the emissions and tax for that will apply, registered new then the emissions and tax for that year/engine size of vehicle will appy (i.e. anything post 94ish will need to pass a cat emission test - anything registered after 2001 will fall into the new government tax scheme) - Q plates are 'visual checks only' for emisisons etc etc

Mine was registered as a 1981 as per the donor vehicles year (although sva'd in 2006) and was £185 a year to tax.

Most 7 esque vehciles are really simple in design and easy to work on with basic mechanical skills, parts will always be cheap, most of them are based on fords.

The 2l zetec on the weber alpha setup will kick out about 165Bhp, awesome performance with go kart handling, plan to have to have the carbs set up once a year as they seem to always go out of tune.

£6k should get you a decent avon, or supercat with a 1.8 or 2.0 zetec.

The most important thing is knowing what you are looking for when you view one, as a couple of people have already hinted at, its all down to the quality of the build!

See http://www.tigerownersclub.co.uk or http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk for some useful info.

Good luck thumbsup

Depends what sort of thing you're after really... For £5k you might be able to get a GTM Libra or Spyder? Most have 1.4 or 1.8 K series (MG TF spec) which aside from possible gasket problems are pretty reliable IMO, although there should also be some Honda V-TEC cars around? Quick, modern with low tax/insurance/emissions :) JJ
