I was looking for a DVD player head unit but a nice cheap one, I like the JVC KD ones but they are around £250-£300, found this Ripspeed one, I know the 'label' isn't so good as JVC, just wondered if anyone had bought one or knew how good/crap they are, considering its £109 on Ripspeed website or £129 at Halfrauds I thought it looked worth a punt...

also how hard are these to fit and will it fit the VX stereo slot!

cheers

Good post. I'd like to know the answers to those questions too.

Maybe combine that head unit with this little active sub :

thats a good idea. I am thinking cheapest way to get nice DVD screen in the VX, dont care hugely about top quality, tbh anything is better than the standard stereo and myn is pretty knackered, so £109 for the headunit and £40 for the amp, looks tempting, almost worth a punt anyway! :D

I've got the Ripspeed DVD-730B which is probably the model before the one your looking at. Works really well. I've not had a disc skip or jump yet and you can actually watch a film on a screen that small!

They're a standard size unit and will fit into the VX's dash without any adjustments. Really easy to fit (although if you buy it from Halfords they'll probably fit it for free).

Legally speaking, your supposed to have the unit wired up to your handbrake so you can only watch DVD's while stationary (or if you fancy driving with your handbrake on). My unit had an override button any way, and Halfords were happy enough to ignore the wiring issue.

The user interface on mine is not ideal (very small radio station ID and track listing) in addition, if you've got several albums on an SD card, you need to use the supplied remote control to change album - fiddly and annoying but not the end of the world.

I too wired it up to an amplified sub

Fits nicely behind the seat

If you've got the standard speakers, you may want to upgrade those too to get some decent midrange and highs.

cool can you change the wallpaper or have an animated screen saver on the screen when not in use? Really like the idea of some nice VX wallpapers or a little movie??? That would clinch it for me! :)

Got the sub from Ebay for around 60 - 70 quid. Really worth it IMO as the bass is deep and loud. Its the Boss Bass 600. Unfortunately, you can't upload screensavers and if you're listening to a cd you just get a crappy Ripspeed logo on screen (they may have changed that in the newer model). You can dowload pictures onto an SD card and show them on screen, but not at the same time as listening to music. :(

Very good althoughtrying to watch it with the roof off is nigh on impossible because the light reflects off the screen. You can also zoom in which is useful for getting rid of the 'letterbox' black lines.

Wires typically go up through the centre console, then up that bit of curved metal seperating the footwells, then up into the under-dash area above the passenger footwell. You can also get to the battery under there via a grommet.

Doubt you'd get two in, there doesn't look like sufficient room behind the passenger seat (and bear in mind that you won't be able to put the drivers seat all the way back either).

Mandarin's solution is better but more expensive and requires an external amplifier. I had very similar in my old VX (soon to go into the new one) and it added some much-needed kick - and because it's right behind you it doesn't need to be loud, so you don't end up sounding like a chav.

There's someone else on here with one of these and he's put it behind the pax seat. I'm not sure, but I think that would hamper the sound. I ran the wires under the plastic cill trim then up under the dash. You get an additional 'volume' control too (which has a nice blue led - gives a nice blue tinge to the cockpit at night) which I just mounted under the dash. This is useful for adjusting the amount of bass whilst on the move as some music needs a bit more 'kick' ;) Mandarinvx's setup is really B) but you lose the shelf and it probably weighs as much as an n/a :P TBH you really don't need two of these. I've never had the volume on it above 1/3 and have the 'loud' setting on the headunit switched off!

My brother 'in law' used to have the 'Ripspeed DVD-722B' in his car, think he might still have it if interested. think its the model before the one you have linked to. I think he may also have a 'pop up' style Ripspeed one for sale as well. He goes through headunits like you wouldnt believe - will randomly change every now and again

Ok, well I decided to buy the head unit today as it was even cheaper, £98!!! So bought that and decided to upgrade my speakers, well one has blown anyway, so got Alpine SXE 1725S coaxial's, cost £39 for the pair. The muppet from Halfords was convincing me that the standard VDO would only come out of the dash if you used a 2mm allen key to undo all the grub screws on the dash face....I said that this was literally dismanthling the stereo, but he was 'sure' it was the thing to do.....anyway it wasn't so luckily another guy just got the stereo grabber thing and lifted the whole unit out.......jeeeeez! Anyway, fitted the unit myself and have to say very pleased. The feel is light and plastic, but what do you expect! DVD playback is very good and loads of features, screen clear and good zoom etc etc, can't go wrong for under a ton! Managed to fit one Alpine, drivers side, but cant find anything small enough to unscrew the swine screws on the passenger side! Is it easier/better to remove the pas seat??? or is this a job in itself! sound through new speaker is much better!! :)
