The really dangerous thing in these conditions is traction control. The Golf drives on snow pretty much as it does in the in the dry, perfect traction pulling away, the TC light just blinks away and sorts it all out. Which is great until you come to needing to stop. Upon which nothing happens  The ABS gets all confused at it takes an age to stop. 0-30mph in about 2s, 30-0 in about 60.

I always remind my mum of this (she drives an S3 Quattro) so pulls away no bother, so you dont realise when you come to stop you are just as useless as everyone else on summer tyres

haha 1/2 foot deep in grays and i can confirm that the VX is a perfectly capable snow car (as i did last year too) did not get into trouble once rallly it was quite amusing see 4X4's crashed at the side of the road (and into ambulances(hope the crew are ok?)) a BMW on the banks of the A13 with its front end destroyed... hmm RE070 on the rear too

Set out to the cinema last night, roads were pretty horrendous. (Did question my common sense). Very few cars out, few 4x4, some abandoned but mainly just people getting where they wanted with copious amounts of wheel spin. Was dead impressed with the Rover on winter tyres. No dramas.

London.

Quite heavy snow falling here. Not settling though. If it does I may go and make a snowman with the carrot offensively positioned. I do that every year. Annoys the neighbours.
