I just snapped the plug that connects to the one of the car battery's vent holes. What would be the potential damage if I didn't replace it and connect it to the battery?

Acid spillage presumably
Might be time to invest in a 'modern' sealed battery

Yep, it is a sealed battery, it's an Alphaline 063. But there's a drain tube in the VX that was connected to the old battery, which I replaced this afternoon, breaking the connector in the process. Having taken the bungs out of the sides of the new battery I assumed I'd have to connect the drain tube to one of them, as was the case with the old battery. Not so? I was thinking the same thing as you - acid spillage or hydrogen something or other gas emitting from it.

Does it say it's a vent point on the new battery, or is there anything in the literature that tells you it must be vented
I'd just put the bungs back in

No literature came with the battery, which surprised me slightly. A sticker on it said to remove both bungs before using it. I just assumed that as the drain thing was connected to the last maintenance free battery that it should be to this one too. oh well!
