Don't know if it's of any use, but.........
When we bought our present house I gutted the hall and started again - ie new wood floors, doors, skirts, arc's etc, etc, as well as replacing all the spindles and handrails on the stairs.....
As our house is quite old I (or rather She) wanted a more 'period' look so instead of the usual stair carpet I had a 'runner' made and edged - and then fitted the old style stair rods which help to hide the join between the carpet and floor....
I must say Garry, you've done a splendid job..very nice indeed

I think wooden flooring would be best in the hall actually as we run the hose through the house when we water the garden or clean the cars - and the lawn mower!
