Thinking about getting the fiancee a new vauxhall tigra. 1.4 air cheap and cheerful. She really isn't bothered about performance and just wants something that looks nice. Any tigra owners on here that can give a quick summary of the car? Good/bad points? (yes, I know its a corsa underneath) Cheers chinky chinky

A friend of ours has one. She bought it from new and in the first year it went back to Vauxhall on countless occasions to have the roof fixed. Often it was gone for weeks. Eventually after threatening legal action the problem was solved by completely replacing all the workings. Unofficially she was told it was a common problem. Her car is now almost 3yrs old so not sure what the build quality is like on the cars now. Other than this saga she is very pleased with it.

Why not bypass the issue and get her a nearly new MX-5 instead?

There are many things I would rather get her but she's pretty set on the tigra! Wanting to get peoples experience of these rather than alternative suggestions. MX5 and MR2 both beat it for me but its what she wants. Also her being 21 means insurance is better on a 1.4 tigra than a 1.6 MX5 or 1.8 MR2. Will have a good trapse through the net regarding the roof issue. I know they have put a new/tweaked roof on them in the last 18 months or so, so hopefully and issues have been sorted there! Cheers

My Folks had a 2000 (W) tigra from new for 8 approx years (just sold a few months ago). It did need something major done to the engine after 3 years (can't remember what, but was about 3K to fix 2/3rds paid by Vax). Nothing else really needed done to it apart from the usual brakes / tyres and exhaust. It was the 1.6 version and was pretty nippy around town. It never leaked.

My wife has just agreed a trade in of her 56 plate 1.8i Exclusive model Tigra. We have had it from new (1st Sept 06). We have not had a single issue with it. I quite like it as a cheapish, simple to own hard top/ conv. Boot is pretty big if the divider is moved forwards, you can feel the weight of the motors etc, but most cars feel heavy following my daily drive Vx220 Turbo. She loved it and the only reason that its going is that she is now 18 weeks pregnant and having two two seaters is no longer an option. I won the battle and mine stays!! We traded for an X3 (Yes I know what the reviews say but she likes it) Anyhow, I think the Tigra is a good little car just my 2 pence worth Mike

Cheers for the replies.

A shiny new 1.4 air tigra will be arriving a week today! Cheap and cheerful!

I tried to convince her on the sunny melon yellow one to match my yellow beast (wouldn't have to pay for metallic paint then!) but she was having none of it and has gone for the Antigua blue one which I think looks very nice! I was pushing for the 17" 5 spoke alloys but she just wasn't bothered so standard alloys she gets!

Should be a nice little open top run around for her. Now we have two open top vauxhalls! :D Who needs practical!

I am sure she will be really happy with it and on the postive front, insurance will be cheap and she is not likely to get caught speeding thumbsup

I think with a LEH transplant it could be a really good 2nd car for when the vx wants to stay warm in the garage :D
