5000 quid?? I was hoping it would be cheaper than that but it appears they're using the 100 quid per bhp rule :(

I've been asking around in italy, at reputable companies that develop charger kits, and the most I was asked was 4000 euros.....sure, it would be my car being used as a lab... ;)

I thought I would bring this rilevant topic up.... B) some patients of mine have a business in making forged pistons, so they offered me to make a lightweight set (along with conrods...) that is a tempting option, since I will have the car dismatled several weeks for body repairs... ;) so, I got in touch with Delta-motor asking how such mods will cope with their supercharger kit ... B) let's see what they come up with! B) heck, I might get forged pistons AND charger.... :jump: :jump:

Cool! B)

I'm still waiting for a "non-wobbly" wheel solution and for Delta-Motor to finalise their Ohlins suspension. Hope to get it all done in early Spring with the 'charger. :groupjump:

You gonna get it done sooner?

well, if I like the answers from delta, exp. the ones about COSTS.... :P
I will surely have it done during the winter recess...
I interrupted insurance yesterday, so from now on only trailering and dismantling... cheers

...a bit sorry for missing some monza and adria track-time, but weather is so unpredictable that chances to find rain/frost/snow are pretty high, so.....
...and I have just as much fun digging into speedy's giblets... :P B)

And here's the text: Supercharged Ecotec: Fast and Furious at a Competitive Price A significant new variant of the original Ecotec 2.2-liter engine is the Ecotec 2.0-liter supercharged, available for the first time in the high-performance 2004 Saturn Ion Red Line edition. The Ecotec 2.0-liter supercharged slams out a formidable 205 horsepower at 5600 rpm and 200 lb.-ft. of torque at 4400 rpm. Development of this highest-performance Ecotec variant (LSJ) leveraged several areas of GM Powertrain expertise, including GM Racing, GM High Performance Vehicle Operations (HPVO) and charged intake specialist Saab, a wholly owned GM subsidiary. To attain the durability targets GM Powertrain engineers require of every GM engine, the Ecotec supercharged 2.0-liter received upgraded components in critical stress areas. Experience in the tortuous crucible of the National Hot Rod Association's Championship Drag Racing series – where the Ecotec has developed a "bullet-proof" reputation as a formidable powerplant for front-wheel drive dragsters – told engineers where the production-car supercharged Ecotec would most benefit from heavy-duty components. Additionally, the Ecotec supercharged 2.0-liter borrows knowledge gleaned by Saab engineers when adapting the Ecotec to the demanding specifications of high-output turbocharged engines. At the heart of the Ecotec supercharged 2.0-liter is an Eaton M62 helical roots-type supercharger. Engineers selected the Eaton unit because of its optimum response characteristics and ease of "packaging" with the Ecotec architecture, according to Grant Brady, design system engineer. Maximum supercharger boost pressure is 12 pounds, and the system includes an air-to-water intercooler to increase intake-charge density, which in turn enhances power and reduces a supercharged engine's propensity to "knock" at high boost levels. The Ecotec supercharged 2.0-liter also is fitted with numerous upgraded components to assure reliability and superior performance: * Sodium-filled exhaust valves more effectively dissipate exhaust heat * A forged-steel crankshaft with induction-hardened fillets and four counterweights * Oil jets cool the underside of each piston with a continuous oil bath * A block-mounted oil cooler and a higher-capacity seven-quart sump * Forged steel connecting rods with a larger I-beam section * Heavy duty pistons with a 23-mm piston pin for increased bearing surface * High-capacity cooling system with larger radiator core and larger dual cooling fans * Coil-on-plug ignition ensures optimum spark under all operating conditions * High-flow, 2.5-inch exhaust system – an almost 50-percent increase – with increased muffler volume reduces power-robbing exhaust backpressure The Ecotec supercharged 2.0-liter also employs electronic throttle control (ETC), which eliminates the cable connection between the accelerator pedal and the engine throttle. "Electronic throttle control is an elegant and effective way to add a higher degree of control for the driver," said Subhedar. "The precision ETC offered is critical for delivering the kind of performance, fuel economy and minimal emissions we expect from this very high performance engine." As with the Ecotec 2.2-liter and new Ecotec 2.4-liter, the 2.0-liter supercharged version employs dual balance shafts, fitted in the engine block, to cancel secondary vertical shaking forces produced by all inline four-cylinder engines. The counter-rotating balance shafts, which rotate at twice the speed of the crankshaft, were a feature GM Powertrain engineers specified from the onset to ensure the Ecotec architecture delivered a high level of refinement and reduced vibration throughout its speed range. The Ecotec supercharged 2.0-liter engine is built exclusively at Fiat-GM Powertrain's Kaiserslautern, Germany, engine plant.

great engine indeed, I wish they splurged and employed it in place of the iron VXT lump.... the thought of an engine swap is tempting, but being mid-mounted, I think it would have problems with engine mounts, intercooler placement, routing of all the extra hoses..... a bit of a mess I' afraid....

intersting points to consider when installing the charger: * Oil jets cool the underside of each piston with a continuous oil bath that is the mod Delta do, and I will as well, if I decide to make forged conrods. * A block-mounted oil cooler and a higher-capacity seven-quart sump an oil cooler is already present, but it could be made bigger....an oil temp. gauge might prove useful.... * Forged steel connecting rods with a larger I-beam section * Heavy duty pistons with a 23-mm piston pin for increased bearing surface so I will ask to make the forged pistons with compression ratio lowered to 8,75, (delta specs) and with 23mm piston pin.... * High-capacity cooling system with larger radiator core and larger dual cooling fans stock one should be fine.... * Coil-on-plug ignition ensures optimum spark under all operating conditions ...we have that already...I also ordered iridium ITV20 (1 grade cooler) * High-flow, 2.5-inch exhaust system – an almost 50-percent increase – with increased muffler volume reduces power-robbing exhaust backpressure I have that already, can't get more free-flowing than that! :D Felix Wyder from Delta-motor told me that now they have further incresead the torque down low, and the car is even faster! B) he agreed with me that employing different pistons is a far better option than using a taller headgasket to decrease compression.... So I guess tomorrow I will start removing the clams, and once the engine is exposed, I will have pistons and rods removed, so to get a sample to make the cast ones.... B) ...have to decide weather to do it myself (I mean, opening the engine, not forging pistons! B) ) or bring it to some mechanic shop.... :( if DIY,problem is there might be the need for some special tools....argh... :o

Are u making your own connecting rods  ?????????????? I think the SAAB Aero or the Saturn Ion ones are adequate
