How much has everyone paid for driveshaft inner gaitor replacement? Mine's dead after the National - three bloody days at Nitron ride height killed it. Would DIY but I don't have time for a few weeks. Duncan - you fancy it?

I haven't dared look at mine to see whether the glue together universal one survived the National. I'd be quite surprised if it has. I think my replacement OE kit was about £55 from AutoVaux but I ordered a few other bits and it's not here yet, so I don't know for sure what it cost. Nor how much of a pain in the arse the fitting is. Am definitely going to have to raise the ride height if that is what's putting the extra strain on them.

£55 is about what i recall one costing me last year. Managed to get a complete shaft from a breakers for £70. Matt, would be interested to know if the repair kit held out

is this failure mode due to the boot perishing from age , high engine bay temperatures or strain from running different wishbone angles?

I think it's probably a combination of all three but certainly exacerbated by low ride heights putting a strain on the boot where it's probably not had it before. Mine was split around 3/4's of it's circumference.

My money is on the ride height. That said, I noted a steering rack gaiter was split as well. With no new VX's out there I need to plan out a rolling program of maintenance to keep it on the road. I am rather happy that after 6 years, 3 cars and 100+K miles this will only be the third item of unscheduled necessary maintenance. I want to keep this record up! Car booked into Sports Car Services on Friday.

Having just spent all morning trying to clean up the mess the initial failure caused (plus the engine and gearbox oil spillages), I'm pleased and surprised to report that my glue together universal cv boot actually held up for the 600+ miles of the National weekend.

Kind of glad I also bought a spare one as that will now go into the trackday/Le Mans/Euro trip critical spares kit along with the SC belt.

I notice i have the same problem, does anyone know the labour cost of getting one fitted. Or the length of time it would take to DIY one?

just fitted the stretch astra cv last week on my stage 4 tubby and it was a peice of p*ss. remove shim bolts although if they wont budge this might be a bstrd. maybe just remove the wishbone mounts if the hub bolts wont budge.? and remove hub nut. remove top suspension bolt and it should give enough room to pull out the bolt from the hub. also get some spray grease if you go this route for the cone as the lube they supply isnt very good. the main thing is to leave plenty of time to do it. tools needed from memory are. jack h6 allen key socket. 17mm wrench 17mm socket/ratchet snips (for old boot) spare cv grease (halfarts) torque wrench preferably new hub bolts. and new split pins for hub nut. rubber gloves when grease gets on hands. much easier and cleaner.also baby wipes for the excess grease. usual friend who has nothing to do that day.lol. also cant see this costing more than £6o although would expect about £40. from a non franchised garage.
