Hey Ali, hope everything is OK. I don't have any useful advice to add but I thought I'd tell you about a conversation I had with a friend today. She asked me if I had fun on Sunday in Wales with all my VX friends to which I replied that it was a brilliant day out but unfortunately one of the cars had engine trouble and had to be picked up by the AA. :( I told her it was your car and she said "Wasn't that your friend who when she bought some parts for her car last time she received a little something extra in one of the boxes ?, maybe when she's buying parts for her car this time she'll receive more surprise gifts."

Is there a way to pull off the chain cover, look to see if the chain is dry or wet with oil, just for a bit of peace of mind or is it more a case of one day the jets get blocked and bang?

You can see if you have the later bits easily without taking anything off. Other than that it's hard to find sings of impending doom.

Do you mean by the engine no.? Or looking at bits on the engine?

if you change your engine oil every 5000 miles or so and don't have a rattle on cold start up then you really don't need to worry too much.

if you hear a rattle on cold start up then get the chain kit replaced asap thumbsup

oil has been change every 7000 from new with gm oil ...... car as now done 56000 miles
car check every two week for oil or long journey
came back from london this morning and becoming paranoid on lessening the engine
mind you the itb's take over

if any one find a kit on ebay welcome to post me the link i'll buy one lol

Mine had the updated tensioner (notched corners).Chain still snapped and had the old chain and jet. Don't rely on just the tensioner as an indication of anything!

Assuming I need to do this, where would people recommend in Oxfordshire / West Berks. I'm near Hoffmans but would that just cost loads?

So sorry to hear about Brum Ali :( You've had such bad luck with your car but I'm glad to see you've not lost your sence of humor as I think I'd have taken a hammer to mine by now! (or a jack but thats another story... :beat: ) I really hope you get it sorted asap and I'm sure collectively with help from everyone on here we can get you and Brum back on the road hopefully far cheaper than you think. :grouphug:

Please have a listen to a cold start, see what you think. I can't see any way of seeing anything down the sides of the engine theres no space for anything!
