I've been advised to change the chain because if it goes in future it'd prob take the timing chain with it, so better safe than sorry.

Is it best to take the engine out? my friend doing the work says it looks quite tight where it is.

do not change the balancer shaft spockets when you do the chain, they are almost imposible to get off and even harder to torque up properly

Glad it is just a couple of bent valves and nothing worse. But what is all this talk about taking the engine out to do some valves and new timing chain?!?! Can't read through all the pages as am busy at work

the chain can be reused as your not driving the heavy balancer shafts, just the pump and idlers.
this guy did

I think the question here is if you should re-use the balance shaft chain after the cam chain has broken. It could have been damaged by the broken chain, just as a broken balance shaft chain might take out a cam chain. I would be reluctant to do it.

If the engine comes out then do a balance shaft delete I would say. I did. Vocky cuts down the shafts to act as idlers. (I am sure that he would appreciate the donation of balance shafts off any dead engines too.) You can't do the shafts with the engine in the car, and I wouldn't pull the engine just to do them.

I re-used my old balance shaft chain, it is only running idlers and the water pump. This also means that you don't have to worry about lining anything up on the balance shaft chain, just throw it back in. (The oil pump is run from the front pulley with its own gubbins, not by either chain.)

If you have the old chain then they can go at any time, tho tends to be 60k+

Vauxhall quoted me around £650 + VAT for labour only to change it

I spoke to vauxhall to try and determine if mine had been done or not as it had a full vauxhall service history and is on 44,000miles. They coulnd't tell me as I had to go in person to where the services were done (b'ham - i'm in oxford) :( but they passed me to GM's helpline, GM told me my car had had recall work done and registered for the rear alloys and something else I forget what.. anyway they said there has been no recall on the engines and there should be no issue and I should just have it serviced to the service schedule. So for those that got it done as a "rework" how if GM say theres no issue? They said there is an update to parts but its not something they would do or have done a "rework / recall" for, customer would have to pay as part of normal service schedule and updated parts would be fitted via that method.

The rework was done only if a customer complained and/or there were timing chain issues. Think the possibility of getting it done gratis expired last year.

If you have a look at the link I included above, it is called a 'Field Remedy', and as the text explains - the work was carried out in the cases of customers complaining. It wasn't a recall. The same document describes the uprated part which was fitted

I think it might even be longer than that Matt,

I had mine done under warranty as it was running out, and that would have been july 06. They said then they were only doing it retrospectively under unique conditions ( i was never let in on what those might be).

Just checked on the Z22SE site and it looks like the field remedy/rework bulletin expired at the end of 2007. Seems like it was totally hit and miss whether you could get a dealer to do anything about it in the first place.

So if you have the revised version, at what mileage is it advised to replace the timing chain??
