I have just removed and cleaned up the sump from my engine, took ages washing it out with petrol to get every little fragment of bearing out! I then test filled it with water to check for leaks and strangely I managed to get it to read about a litre higher than the level in the sump. Effectively due to a bubble or something the water in the dipstick tube was about 10mm higher than that in the sump! :tumble: :tumble:

I hate this sump/dipstick system more every time I think about it.

Note the level of water is higher in the dipstick breather channel!

I think drilling the breather holes bigger might help here...

From frustration to frustration... I tried to put the inlet manifold supporting bracket on but the hole wasn't lining up with the plate that is bolted onto the block. So while I was changing the sump I thought I would loosen that plate drop it down and attach it properly. Only I can't because the inlet manifold is fractionally pinching it and I can't release it....without taking off the belt, supercharger and inlet manifold again :(

So today... - SC off, inlet manifold loosened - Support bracket removed, modified slightly and refitted - Sump on - Manifold on - Downpipe on - SC etc back on - Refilled with oil, coolant etc - Cranked on the starter motor to get some oil around the system - Fired up :D However I am now kind of stumped for the weekend as my 3" repackable exhaust was difficult to separate, finally got it apart, decided to open it up fully to check the packing (it was all still there) but getting it back together was a right pain in the backside so I may send that back to Chris to get him to check it and do it for me :/ Seems to run ok though, very loud with no silencer and with the balancer shafts out, lightened flywheel and having not started for a while the idle fluctuates slightly but I think that is to be expected.

Cheers Matt :)

Your magnetic sump plug is in, hopefully will pick up any remaining crud in there.

Boot lid, latch mechanism, arch liner etc all back in. Taken it for a longer drive today, bit of dual carriageway stuff to test it a bit more. All seems ok, only observations are: - What I think it s slight belt squeel noise when cold - my belt is very tight anyway - A slight "puff...puff...puff..." noise that I can't put my finger on, only slight though - At 3-4k rpm when coming off the throttle in lower gears there seems to be a more pronounced engine breaking effect. It may even be slight resonance from the lack of balance shafts. Is that normal for a car with no balance shafts and lightweight flywheel?

Glad she is running but hasn't it got the wrong coloured s/c unit on it?

Id say yes there may be a stronger braking effect as you've not got the extra weight keeping the engine spinning so it would slow faster and therefor slow you faster
