Okies Alex, many thanks. Let me see how many bits I can strap to the engine this week and I'll give you a ring.

Barely any concept of running-in oil in this country. I've never found anything like they do in the States and always ended up using mineral oil.

I just rang Halfrauds up to see if they have any running in oil and a 5pk * 905mm belt, they had neither, bloody useless, how can they even call themselves a car accessory shop ?
Did you really expect anything different. What sort of size customer base do you expect will want running in oil?

It's just branding. Most running in oils are just low quality additive packages in mono grade oils.

I thought they were all rich in zinc and other weird and wonderful things that have been stripped from regular oils. You're right though, probably still mostly branding.

This could end up quite a long post, let's see.
Zinc is an incorrect term - the functional additive is Zinc Dialkyl Dithio Phosphate, usually abbreviated to ZDDP or ZDTP. The zinc component is actually just to stabilise the chemical in storage, it's completely non-functional. The dialkyl dithiophosphate salt is the part that reacts with ferrous surfaces to create a protective layer. ZDDP contains phosphorus so damages catalytic converters, the movement to complex catalytic converters has created a new class of oils described as mid or low SAPS oils. Their aim is to reduce the SAPS (sulfated ash, phosphorus) which is damaging to catalytic converters and general ash (non-burnable material) which can block DPFs.
These oils have been assigned a new category, (ACEA C category), the existing 'full SAPS' (high ZDDP and high detergent) oils still have as much ZDDP as they have ever had. This is to support older vehicles and in situations where reduced ash oils are not needed (such as high performance petrol engines).
Logistically, none of the companies selling running in oils have the capacity to design their own additive packages. They will buy the additive packages from us or one of the other three additive suppliers and brand them as they see fit. Most often they will use the low cost (full SAPS) additive package and combine it with a thick base stock, this minimises costs for them and keeps idiots happy with the mineral oil requirement.
The only reason to use mineral oil for running in rather than synthetic is because it's cheaper. The oil type doesn't have any other impact as long as the grade that is selected is within the recommendations of the engine manufacturer. This bit is key, if you use an oil which is too thick or thin then you could face oil starvation or excessive wear. I think the Z22SE engines recommend 0W-30 to 10W-40, I would run in with the thicker then switch to something thinner.

Eurocarparts site lets you check stock in your local branches and reserve them for collection. Works really well, I reserved something a few weeks ago and about 40 seconds after I'd reserved it online, the branch called to say it was ready and waiting for collection. Exactly the same with GSF as well.
