Opened up a 1 litre bottle of Port as it's raining cats and dogs here and hence can't drive Nipper :( Garage is all cleared up now. However my girlfriend has asked why I have so many engine parts racked up in shelves (that she wants to put plant pots on) - pffft! Women.... don't let them in your garage, the last time she was in there she was sawing some wood over my oil/water heat exchanger, casually dropping sawdust into the thing without a care in the world!! Thankfully BatMan came to my rescue and sent me an uncontaminated one.

Chris has had to postpone my final mapping session this Sunday, so I'm not scheduled to drive up until next weekend now (the bank holiday one).

In the mean time I will remap one of the issues out myself. At the moment, because the refreshed engine is making so much more vacuum the map is not correct any more and it overfuels when coasting down in gear (and in vacuum). I'll take it out tonight and start hot changing fuel cells until I can get close to lambda or even a bit leaner.

This ability to self map is just great, it's the last part of the jigsaw that I could never have control of.

Went out for another mini mapping session tonight and changed a few more fuel cells when the car is in vacuum.

I have also built a little "table" over the passenger seat to mount the laptop so that it is easier to access and to stop it flying around. I had thought that I had secured it quite well, however a few brisk squirts and braking made me realise I need to bolt it down more.

Some black BMW 3 series tried it on, the first car to do so for a long while, I think you can guess what happened :)

With a 10 PSI maximum boost on my lower power map I reckon I'm getting somewhere between 280 and 330 BHP at a guess which makes the car very drivable, but noticably weedy compared to how it was previously. I will be interested to know what the dyno shows, particulariy the torque as it feels low enough to allow me to have a nap between gear changes ATM ;)

is it easy to run with AFR > 14.7 on your new setup , I take it the ecu now sees a wideband signal so its a lot easier to work with.

Not particularily, you have to watch what cell you are in whilst reading the wideband. Then pull over and adjust the fueling cell and retest.

The wideband is not currently an input to the ECU, I did ask Chris if we could do this but he seemed reluctant. If it were an input, then things would be a lot easier.

Thanks, the wheels are just ordinary TurboDynamics 1.3 18x8 front and 18x10 rear. I had them machined to my spec, so don't need a spacer on the rears, however the front's do need a spacer as they could not drop the ET into negatives to fit the extra width of the front clam (I think because the casting was maxed out at the centre/hub section). I'm not very keen on the wheels TBH, I bent one within 3 months of getting them (on a bumpy B-road) and they messed me about with replacing it under guarantee. I now have to slow down on really bumpy tarmac as I don't want any more bent ones. The width of the wheels really changes the character of the car, if you decide to do something similar you need to be aware of the pros and cons.

That's the big downside to wider wheels with different offset to standard as it can massively effect the scrub radius and alter the Ackerman effect on steering

Do You have the ET on the rears?  I was thinking of wider wishbones  for front, using my 17x8 rims, and buying 10x18 for the rear, using  Toyo R888 Tires 235/45-17 and 275/35-18. And I will probably get upprights for next year...

you would be better running 285/30/18s so you dont massively increase your tyre diameter which will effect your gearing and also means you have to run worse roll centres to maintain the ride height you want.

Note nev has different body work to standard car to contain the wider wheels. For most of us as soon as you get to a 9J wheel and 245 tyre that's where rubbing can start

Both front and rear are ET15, I use a 16mm spacer on the front wheels to make it ET-1, no spacer is required for the rear wheels. However, my front wheels rub on the inside of the wheel arches when you turn sharply, not that it is of any consequence to me really. If you are getting new lowered hub centre uprights you must be rich :) (if they are Elise Parts ones) or know a good local engineer who can make some for 1/2 the price. If it's the latter, I may well be interested in a set.

Not Rich, but I'm working to many hours... I have made room( cut away and fiberglassed ) and reworked the sills/body in the Wheel Arches for more clearance...Was thinking of the EP ones.... But I have some friends that might be upp to the task...

I stuck the new coil-pack in it last week and it's helped improve things slightly, as I'm now using wasted spark on my ECU I guess it will "tire" the coilpack out 4 times faster.

I've done over 500 miles in the last 3 weeks roughly and my wallet is feeling the pinch

Nev,

Is it fully mapped now, or does it still need a return trip to EFI ?

Steve

Went into the garage last night and found the OSR tyre of the car was flat. That's the second puncture I've had on the VX in 4 years, whilst having none on my daily driver car (which does 5 times the milage)!

Took the wheel off at lunchtime today to take to a repairer/vulcaniser and discovered the v70 tyre is already almost worn out after just 1500 miles approximately. I am deffo gonna swap to another make, as getting 6mm of tread on a new £250 tyre which wears out so fast is just unreasonable.
