looking forward to see the build :D

Me too the 1mm and 1.2mm welding is going to be blow-through hell (I think I will cheat and use overlapped joints to double the thickness!)

turn the power down, weld a spot at a time, chamfer the edges to create a bigger weld surface, easy thumbsup

Yea, a 45 degree chamfer deffo helps, my welder can go as low as 10 amps. If I am fooking it up badly, I have a professional welding friend who can come round and do it for me.

Welding thin stuff is easy, you just need to get on with it. Run a lead away from the edge and then round the joint and run a tail away from the join. Some years ago I ran a B1 Chrysler at around 1000bhp. Ran 7 sec quarters with 2x3" systems. I wonder what the gas speed in that was?! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Fooking fast gas speeds, but presumably a very straight run.

Got the sheet bent up nicely this morning, write up is here (scroll down): https://sites.google...gn/05-build-log

Gonna get my ski salopetes on (it's freezing here) and dive into the garage now for some more fiddling.

Nev dropped you a text not sure if you have changed number? I am looking at the exhaust for my ikle project and depending on costs / availability want 5 inch tube and 1,1.5D bends for my downpipe and will reduce for exhaust subject to costs of materials 3.5/4 inch Any good suppliers of this size? DG

I have no idea about where to get 5" pipe Duncan as it was never on my horizon, the prices do vary a lot and hunting around payed off for me. I have to say I'm a bit surprised to see you using it after your comment about my choice of 3.5" being excessive, unless your engine is about 1000 HP.

Had a somewhat long session in the garage again yesterday, lots of time and little to show for it, pics and write up at the bottom of here: https://sites.google...gn/05-build-log

Cheers Nev My view remains the same in terms of power and noise for your setup 😉 and restrictions of space in the vx. I would say the compromises sit between noise, cost and outright peak power. As power no in short demand would put me im a decent 3inch system I want group B rally noise 😊 turbo outlet is 4.25 inch std have another cylinder to vent also 😉 Do not need all the power available but do want all the drama and sense of occasion 😊 DG

Yep I think we all know that, however a truck silencer is extremely unlikely to fit into the void of the VX220. Anything pre-bought just won't utilise the space fully, this is why I am making a silencer from scratch that uses every square inch of the void. Also, I am doing my best to keep weight down, which presumably is not an imperative for a truck silencer.

Wow, that seems cheap, who exactly made it for you please?

I made the butterfly valve and welded up the silencer today, pics and write up here (scroll down): https://sites.google...gn/05-build-log

The butterfly valve works rather better than I expected. The 6mm spindle has to be straight so it can poke out of a small 7mm hole in the side end cap of the silencer, allowing the end cap to be pulled off, whilst the butterfly assembly and spindle are still in the silencer can. However I will need to invent some way of connecting a 90 degree arm to it, so that the spring can pull on it. Can anyone think of a way to do this such that the arm is solid and strong, yet could be removed if I need to take the silencer end cap off (labelled as "necessary join" in the pic)?

Perhaps if you read about design #3 (instead of implying how much more than me you know about my own car at high engine load), you'd be able to keep up.
