Yep, I think MIG would really help due to it's "filling" nature. At the end of the day, I only have rudimentary cutting tools, so making the parts fit well is next to impossible with gaps of 1 to 3 mm a lot of the time.

I've used MIG before, and even though it looks and sounds horrendous with the splattering and noise, the end result is better welds in general (in terms of fill and penetration).

TIG is fine for exposed buttwelds, but getting into narrow concave bends with both the torch and the rod is much harder than MIG.

Get a smaller torch you've probably got a WP26 which is the standard size going to a WP19 will make it a lot easier to get into the hard to get areas. Also you could cut the tungsten down and fit the flat end to reduce the size down even more.

Did a bit of a high speed run today and just went to fill up fuel for tomorrow's run and discovered the front clam has bent inwards at one of the corners again from the air pressure. This in turn has caused a small downward bend in the front floorpan. I think I need to support it with with some sort of metal stay(s) from the crash-box. On the plus side, the rattly baffle in my silencer seems a fair bit quieter now, perhaps it's detached enough to wedge itself into some corner somewhere!

What sort of high speed? I often hit rev limiter at 306 km/h (about 190 MPH - GPS measured) on the Autobahn and nothing bent so far. Do you have a picture of the bent Clam/ floorpan?

As you approach the speed of light you get heavier. Maybe that's the problem?

I get the problem because I don't have an OEM front clam, instead I have a GMS front clam (which is lighter and less strong) and also the fixing points are different.

There is a pic here, where you can see the bottom floorpan has a few mm gap between itself and the left most bottom side of the clam. Pic was taken about 3 months ago BTW, it's worse than that now.

Test speed was around 70 MPH, I never go faster than this or CocoPops tells me off.

Ah OK, that's the reason.

Could you stiffen the GMS-Clam by laminating honeycombs to it?

They weigh almost nothing and even thin fibre stuff becomes very rigid and strong.

That's a good suggestion, I'll take the wheel off sometime and have a head scratch.

Another summer over I think, got up early this morning to go for a drive but it didn't become light until about 6.15, so I went back to bed. :( Off climbing in sunny Spain for a few months now, so shan't be driving him for a bit.

Is it wrong to get drunk in the early afternoon, instead of looking for a job ?!

Hmmm.... I'm pretty sure I know of two that go faster than that (and thats not including me (before Cocopops tells me off for going over 30!)).

Hopefully, he is a work (earning NI contributions for me) and unable to respond to this !!
