What lorry filter are you using? I had a very detailed look at filters and air boxes for commercial vehicles, but could not find one that flows enough and fits. Issue is that the ones I saw have very large surface areas, but very little inside diameters in comparison. Reason behind that is they have very high dust loading capacity, which makes sense for commercial vehicles doing lots of kilometers (or agricultural or mining equipment for that matter). The design criteria for passenger cars is different. Usually packaging constraints are far more important and filters are changed more frequently. I couldn't find one that had a large enough diameter on the clean side and was small enough to fit. I'm just curious to what you intent to use.

Your physics on the ram air scoop are a bit on the optimistic side. And have a look at the Venturi effect with regards to your assumption that the pressure increases due to cross sectional areas decrease. You might be in for a surprise

Not at all sure what specific air filter I'd use, was just thinking in general terms so far. I can see your insightful critical point about them though, maybe I'll have to use some over-price "go-faster" car cone filter for 5 times the price and 1/2 the filtration ability. :(

The ram effect will be negligible I know, but it's nice to know whatever little there is a tiny step in the right direction. As an interesting fact, I recently read that just a 6 PSI wave of pressure is enough to knock over a normal brick house. :o

Getting it inside will be challenging as the roll bar is in the way of the ideal place. You like a challenge though lol. I think your biggest benefit will be a cooler air flow into the filter than the boot (total guess).

Yep, making it fit will be hellish. There are also other issues, heat on the bulkhead panel (it easily reaches 150 degrees C), flex requirement for the engine rocking, eliminating/capturing any rain water that comes into the scoop, connection to the air tube if I drive without the roof on. Lastly consideration of driving with the softtop on and windows up, but with the engine sucking out 8'x8'x8' of air out of the cabin every minute, the pressure drop could be quite considerable and cause the softtop to drop down and ears pop.

You're surprised that half an atmosphere of pressure working on the side of a house pushes it over?

Couldnt you make something similar to the snorkels you see on chaved up MR2's, you could feed it from the roof scoop and route it through the clam next to the engine cover.:-

I'm not too keen on those snorkels to be honest, I think they'd look a bit out of place on VX220, and as you say somewhat chavy. The roof scoop is the obvious place to take air from IMO, so long as I make a sump in the pipework for the rain water to collect in and drain from - the last thing I want is liquid water in the cylinders of my precious £3k engine!

I've just mounted the final 2 rear bolts onto the roof and I have to say the whole thing feels pretty well fixed down. So I now have 4 fixing points to the windscreen and 4 fixing points to the rollbar. My main worry is whether the glass and resin is strong enough to cope with the pressure & lift. I have already gusseted the roof to the wooden mounting blocks with resin and will add some more chopped strand mat around the block's sides to beef things up.

I had a test spray on a card with a Vauxhall "Diamond Black" rattle can this morning and it's looking a little better than the 28U can I used last. The only real way to check the colour match is to spray the actual roof and see it sunlight against the bodywork. At £7 a can this could start becoming an expensive process.

I was more meaning the routing of the snorkel, down the side of the engine cover into the bay, and take the opening up across the back window to the roof scoop. So like a Zonda Cinque roof scoop top half crossed with the MR2 snorkel bottom half.

Does that make sense?

It would be hard to make and could still look shite!

Taking a break from working on Nipper as I need to service my shed before going off to the Alps for a few weeks.

I'm also going round to help a friend on this extremely unusual and little known powerful VX220. The amount of unusual and carefully considered mods on this beats Nipper hands down!

Check out that classic tear-drop roofline!!

Yep, that and about 20 other serious and unique mods. His is the closest car that has got to keeping up with Nipper. We made some new wishbones for it last year and he says it's even grippier now, all camber eliminated and KPI changed like an old school Alfa. He badly needs a stand alone ECU on it though, the current CS map is terrible and lets it down unfortunately - I am constantly nagging at him to get it done!

I spot a roll cage in there, so it deserves it's own project thread here with more pics & mods!

I agree, I hadn't expected the roof to be so handsome, but it has a wonderful tear-drop side profile. Big diameter aluminium roll cage in there now - I saw it in bits on his garage floor, but I haven't been in the car since it was welded and finally fitted in.

I don't think he's too interested in writing up any details on here.

Care to tell some details on those wishbone mods? Camber "eliminated" (??) and the KPI changed sounds like serious deviations from the Lotus design.. He also runs with modified hubs?

He did all the maths and explained the changes to me at the time, but it was last year and I've forgotten most of it. Initially we chopped up some OEM wishbones and extended them asymmetrically, but neither of us were happy with the way the sleeving in them worked, so he binned them and made some new ones up from scratch I believe.

He's emailed me to say he will endeavour to post something up on the forum, though he is a rather busy "man of leisure" and is away in Spain at the moment. I'm off to France/Italy/Switzerland/Austria too soon, but we are meeting up in about 3 weeks, I'll try and get him online to write it down then. :D

I'm pretty sure my Nitron spring collars have been slowly unwinding over the last year or so, are there any clever ideas how to stop this...?
