I looked at the slate wall/incline you were climbing and thought - hang on a minute - I recognise that, and then the rest of them.
Oh, are you a climber? I used to love climbing slate when I was younger - Comes the Dervish etc.

No, it's just local to me. Never climbed, but I used to be able do one arm pull ups, can you? The only other people I knew who could do them were climbers. :-)
I could do only ever do 80% of one, I could never finish the final part of the pull. Now-a-days I don't cross-train or diet for it, but still love outdoor adventures. I seem to do more surfing and hill/mountain walking now, which is quite a lot easier and safer.
Sounds like your power to weight ratio is excellent, maybe you could give climbing a go?

Nah, unfortunately I'm an old git now.

I remember Comes the Dervish, horrible crux move at the top with those nasty finger jams after the exposed traverse.
Always prefered last tango in Paris to the the left of the Dervish, same height but always felt like less exposure.

Went for an New Year drive into the hills this morning and at about 60 miles in I really booted it hard in 4th gear... I now have a grinding noise in 4th gear as well now, so the gearbox has really had it's chips.
I really need to swap the gearbox and differential over, I've already bought and picked up the replacement, I just need to get my lazy arse into the garage for a day and do it.
I'm even partly tempted to give it to a garage to get it done, but I fear the expense and the chance (likelihood?) they will will cock it up somehow.

There are no reputable gearbox rebuild shops in the UK?

Yea, I got a few quotes about 5 months ago, but they want circa 8 times the price of a second hand box (the one I bought was £70 off a Zafira GSI). Cheaper to just install a second hand box IMO, hopefully the one I've bought is fit for purpose and also it has 8% lower gear ratios which I would like. Even if it has problems, I'll just buy another second hand one as they are common and cheap as muck.
TBF the F23 is a flipping amazing gearbox, I can hardly complain considering it was designed for 220 ft/lb, it's amazing how well they last on tuned VXes and a credit to German engineering. You just have to consider them as disposable I guess!

at least you will learn something when you have the old box apart

Did you go for a 3.95FD ratio gearbox Nev? I think the turbo should have came with these as standard..

3.63 as standard

Yep, the Zafira boxes are lower ratio (if the internet is to be believed), probably due to heavier vehicle weight and larger frontal area to overcome air resistance.
There isn't a sticker on the box, but it should be the same as a "DZ" I think (ie 3.95 FD)

Crikey, just read that my mapper has squeezed 860 HP out of his 2 Litre engine. Runs on methanol (which is 2 times cheaper than petrol) as well !

His Renault 5 drag car Nev?
Not seen his car for a while but last time I saw it was with new cage and parachute fitted
Yup, apparently he was leaking boost, once he fixes that he's expecting > 900 HP.
Very impressive.

I wonder what boost he is running now, i think he was running about 3 bar over a year ago!!

44 PSI to make 860 HP, he's expecting 50 PSI (once he's fixed the boost leak).
Nipper only made 550 HP at 30 PSI, so his VE is very impressive, somehow with just 14 PSI more he's making an extra 210 HP.

boost is a daft way to think about power

The effects of temperature and air density are most observable on an ordinary turbo charged car when you take it out out for an early morning run on a cold day. You can really feel the difference in power.
