Will it not just be a standard 2.2 box with a 3.95 F/D, the standard VXT is a 3.84 F/D, and i cant imagine is a 4.17 F/D or 4.41 F/D

Before dis-information from the usual source (chris_uk) leads to a misunderstanding, here is the info I gleaned from a German Opel source.

I have added some cells that compare gear ratios and the Vmax between my old 3.632 FD box and my new 3.947 FD box. Bear in mind the Vmax figures are for my specific car, where my rear wheels rolling circumference are slightly larger than OEM and my max RPM is 8000. MPH values are GPS measured (as opposed to speedo figures).

Hopefully this will eliminate incorrect info from circulating. All in all I have found it suits my car really well indeed, better than anticipated, but I expect that is mainly due to my extended rev range. I'm not sure how it would feel on an OEM VX220 turbo that runs out of puff by 5500 RPM; you might find yourself constantly having to change gear.

Nev, presume you used your existing SRT gearing and swapped in a 3.95 final drive?

Do you know where the 5th gear set on the F23 is? On many transverse gearboxes / transmissions, its the last gear set at the opposite of the side of the bell-housing (accessible from the end plate).

Wondering how feasible to add a longer 5th gear (from a WR ratio box - 0.686) to an existing SR or SRT arrangement..

I didn't do anything fancy, just plonked the donor Zafira gearbox straight on to my engine (i.e. I didn't open it up).

When I was looking around on the internet, there was some conflicting info on the 5th gear ratios (SRT vs others). In the end, I am not entirely sure which one I got. Based on the 150 miles I did yesterday with the new box, I need approx 2950 RPM for 5th gear @ 70 MPH (speedo indicated) using a 285mm x 30% profile rear tyre (down to 2mm of tread) - you could use that to extrapolate the 5th gear ratio from that if you want.

Sizten's link looks useful for you. Also, Vocky knows a lot if I remember.

AF is the identity on a stock VXT gearbox.

Its the close ratio version.

The F23 comes in close and wide ratio with differing F/D and bell housings.

Hope some of the info helps

I always use this website for gear ratios - https://www.opel-inf...triebe/f23.html

As I've always said, if I could only do one mod to a vx220 it would be to change the gearbox

My own NA, which has a close ratio M32 box, accelerates as quick as a 300bhp SC with a 4.17 box

Cheers - looks like changing the 5th ratio along is not possible unless you strip and rebuild..

I couldn't find the link to the German site. That's the best one by far for gearbox info.

Vocky do you find 1st of any use with a 4.17? The f23 is kind of limited unfortunately. If you go for a lower fd 1st becomes a waste of space and a higher fd makes 5th a waste even with the so called closer ratio box. I'd love a longer first and then closer ratios.... Keep thinking M23 with big bearings and cooler is the only way.

I've been toying with swapping my gearbox for similar reasons to Nev. I have never needed 5th on track, the shift point is about 155 which is bonkers.

Sounds like the 3.74 or 3.95 ratios are a cheap worth while upgrade (if you can DIY it) for turbo owners, just like the 4.17 is for NA / SC peeps..

I was actually surprised how useful first still was with the 4.17, still use it just like i normally did with the 3.95.

don't forget to include the costs for workshop to swap the gearbox , which for many will mean rear clam off  . Plus you would be probably thinking about changing slave cylinder , inspect friction material at the same time.

Re-using old slave cylinders is a recipe for disaster. A friend reused a not so old one and it lasted 100 miles..

Early morning shot from my drive out to the Irish Sea (Aberystwyth).

275 miles of pure fun getting there with no traffic, not so much fun coming back later with tons of traffic.
