Made some good progress yesterday (detailed in the last paragraph here). Tonight when I get home I need to bleed the clutch and pray that it doesn't leak hydaulic fluid again. If it's all good this means I can put all the rest of the ancilliary parts back on as well as the rear clam and it should be up and running by the end of the evening for a test drive - HORRAH !

My hydraulics chap has popped round and taken some measurements of fuel pipes and will be fitting the new pipework for the 2nd fuel pump and swirl pot. He is super skillful and I am glad to be in the hands of a professional as a leak at 9+ BAR of pressure would probably catastrophic and the end of the car in (and maybe me!). He will be fitting this all on Tues, giving me a day to test drive it prior to driving to Courtenays on Thurs for the 'big tune' of the year.

I have to say I am getting very excited now, the light at the end of the tunnel is looming into sight. If all goes well with the mapping, the car may be fully working in time for the National meet which I would love to come to, even if I cant get a place to track the car.

you got caught out by that seal, never mind you will know next time to whip it out of the alloy block and fit it to the clutch pipe before connecting them together

you would be surprised how many people fall for that first time round

Poop, I didnt realise it was a 'well known problem' - otherwise I could have saved myself £53 and taking the entire gearbox off :(

Had a nasty headache last night but managed to get clutch bled and thankfully it has not leaked a drop and the pedal is nice an firm. I also got the driveshafts back in the box and put the rear suspension back on. This just leaves the easier 101 jobs for me this evening...

Took the car for a tiny test drive last night and hydraulic fluid is still escaping from somewhere. I am sincerely hoping it's due to the rubber grommet as this will be a 30 minute investigation/fix tonight. Is there some special way to ensure that the gromet does not dis-located from the nipple end of the slave clyinder pipe? I find the alu bleed connector that sits on top of it is strained slightly due to the hardpipe tugging it towards the bulkhead.

If you remove the alloy housing and seperate the rubber grommet - make sure its not split in any way and then put it over the pipe and push back in - job done - if the grommet is in the alloy housing it slips too far down and does not seal DG

Thx Duncan. I spent 20 mins in the garage this morning, refitted the alu bleed connector and the pipe that leads to it. It was deffo under strain and after some fiddling about I have it now sitting in a 'neutral' position without leverage being exerted on it from the pipe. I also banded one of my driveshafts in some more, which has cured the leak out it. A quick 'passive' test drive for 6 miles and I have just checked it, ALL LEAKS HAVE BEEN CURED !!! This may sound such a basic thing, but I've spent the last month fixing them, it's a bloody relief. Now the last job is to install the extra fuel pump, swirl pot, fuse, relay and big bore fuel pipes on Tues, ready for mappying on Thurs !!! To say that I am excited is an understatement :jump:

Predictions for Thursday Nev?

Ummm, well I suppose it's really up to me what I want to get out of the engine, and how much boost + stress I want to put it under. Tuning this engine will not be like an ordinary stage x tune, where the decission is to max out boost and just get the maximum power out of the engine. The GTX3071 turbo that I've installed is suppose to be capable of sustaining 2.5 bar of boost which should produce in the region of 550 BHP, however I think I am going to aim at around 1.7 bar of boost which should be around 450 BHP give or take a few tens. By limiting the power hopefully I will be extending the the life of the engine, gearbox, running gear etc.

Power remaining 'live' for about 30 sec means this is the power feed to the ECU from the main relay controlled by the ECU. The ECU is kept powered on for at least 30 seconds after switching the engine off to run it's final actions (eg. resetting throttle, closing valves, etc.) before shutting off completely. Also, in cars which have this option it's usually also kept live to switch on the rad fans if it detects heat soak. So it's a switched live, just not connected directly to the ignition barrel. You could always take a trigger feed to your relay from the inertia switch wiring. This way it's 'slaved' to the normal fuel pump and (more importantly) the secondary pump is also turned off if the inertia switch is triggered in a crash or rollover. IMHO the most logical spot to get a signal from to drive the relay for the second fuel pump.. Bye, Arno.

Arno, thanks for the tip about the pump still running afer a crash, modifying the pick up for the switched live to the relay to come from the intertia switch wiring sounds like a good idea. Presumably this is the rubber press button thingy in the rear of the engine compartment on the nearside? Is it easier to get/find the wire that leads to the OEM fuel pump instead? Any idea of the wire colour ?! XXX, yea fire extinguisher for major fueling mods is critical. I have one in the car as well.

Yup.. the rubber pushbutton in the engine bay is the one! thumbsup Don't know the wiring colour on the VX, but should be trivial to use a multimeter on the connector from the wiring harness to the intertia switch to determine which pin/wire is the 12V feed from the car and which is the output to the fuel pump. Just splice your wire into the pump wire and it should switch on in tandem with the normal pump and if anything bad happens :o it turns off when the inertia switch triggers and cuts the 12V feed. Bye, Arno.

The prospect of actually getting the car 'wrung out' on the rollers tomorrow is starting to make me gnash my nails. For the engine run in over the last 6 weeks, I've only been able to take it to 3500 revs (occasionally to 4000 for a brief gearchange or two). However, on the rollers it will be going to twice this rev range and with correct timing and fueling probably making 4 times the power that I have so far got out of it... Also, I still have a few (non critical) jobs to do this evening before setting off on the lonely 250 mile, 5 hour trek to Courtenays tomorrow: 1. Drain oil. 2. Take lower sump out and tighten upper sump bolts to try and cure my oil leak. 3. Fill with new fully synth oil. 4. Modify electrics on new fuel pump to use a non time delayed switched live. 5. Fix my wideband gauage to the dashboard more securely so it doesn't annoyingly fall off at every bump. 6. Go for a test drive and fill the tank with 99 octane. I am going to leave the car with them rather than staying there and hoping it will all be done in a day. Apparently Klassen is on standby in Germany to email the maps back and forth. I am gussing that he will most likely have to create a new base map as the Garrett GXT3071 is unlikely to have been in a VX220 before and certainly my home made MAF will need it's own calibration curve. Also all my headwork and 76mm pipework will radically change the engine's breathing characteristics.

my ongoing oil leak turned out to be the cam cover weeping next to the pcv elbow, but only under boost. since then and putting in 10w/60 its been bone dry, for 5000 miles round scotland and france.
