Am picking the car up tonight and I'm quite excited, though I am worried whether it's going to be quiet enough. He has built me a 'bung' to fit into the top exit of the twin tailpipe. Apparently this helps quieten it down a lot according to Dan... we shall see. I will try and get it over to Castle Coombe for another static test once weekend.

just makesure your open tailpipe is the same diamater as the rest of the exhaust system as it would cause a restriction otherwise (depending on your map i guess0 how come it wasnt done in time for nec/

I generally find a bung up my tailpipe very restrictive and uncomfortable to say the least :D

Well I got back ok last night. It was snowing but luckily hadn't started settling properly on the motorway. The exhaust is not quiet though, probably noisier than the last one.

When will you know if the power has changed? Seems a shame if it's so much louder that you won't be able to use the power for fear of getting an asbo  Or Section 59, I think thats what it's called? --Edit-- Yes, Section 59. Source: http://bbs.scoobynet...raffic-act.html

Hmmm, the car exhaust has started smoking quite a lot recently. I first noticed this when it had a smokey episode for approx 15 seconds at the rolling road about 2 months ago. Since then it has been occuring abit more often. At start up there is no smoke (hence not the valve stem seals). The problem only manifests itself once the oil warms up. The likely candidate for this is oil getting past the turbo seal(s) on the spindle. The unlikely candidate (and much more severe!) could be an oil ring failing on 1 or more pistons. Once the snow goes and it warms up a bit this weekend I might crawl under the car and do 2 things: 1. Check the kink in the rubber oil return pipe. This had a bit of an awkward bend in it when I installed it which may mean the pipe is semi collapsed, not allowing enough oil to return to the sump fast enough. This would cause the pressure around the spindle to be excessive and hence leak past the seals either into the compressor or the turbine. 2. Install a 1mm restrictor before the oil inlet to the turbo. This will hopefully reduce oil pressure and alleviate the problem. I am hopeful (75% ?) that this will fix it and permanent damage won't have happened if I am right, as a bit of oil creaping into the inlet or exhaust is inconsequential. If it is getting into inlet side, thats a bit more annoying as it may have coated the inside of my precious charge cooler matrix with oil, maying it less effiecient - something I could possible clean by injecting something volatile like methanol into the air intake to try and clean. I just hate crawling under the car on my back in winter. I wish I knew someone with a ramp in the Bristol area who'd let me use it for a bit.

I had a quick chat on the phone with a couple of friends. One of them has an Astra and says he's seen 60 PSI oil pressure off his engine just at idle. I also remember DuncanVxr saying he saw 120 PSI off his and that must have been < 6500 RPM and mine revs way higher (with consequentialy more oil pressure presumably). If this is the case then it's virtually certain to be the seals. I've ordered a restrictor off eBay - hopefully it will fit correctly and I can actually get access to the part on top of the turbo to get it fitted.

Did you not have a restrictor pre-turbo before Nev?

No I deliberately didn't fit a restrictor before the turbo, based on info I got from a phone conversation with a techie at ATP turbo in the USA. His logic was: 1. Keep oil pressure as high as possible to the turbo (to maximise life/cooling). 2. Add a restrictor only if you get problems (which I think I am). Did you fit one on yours ?

Hmm, looking into this further, maybe I should fit a turbo oil scavenge pump and push the oil from it to a radiator matrix in the passenger side ear and thence back to the block. This would eliminate the blue pipe (and any kink it might have) and also have the added benefit of cooling the oil more.... lets see how active/lazy I feel tomorrow !

The possible offending gravity pipe is the blue one. Note in this pre-installation pic, how I tried to use a couple of clips to compress the centre to try and reduce the risk of pipe colapse. Maybe this hasn't worked in the long run. Incidentally, the pipe was covereed with a heat shield prior to installation.

Why not get some aero quip fittings for it larger bore with no restriction and no risk of kinking. Does it have high oil temps at moment? Adding a another oil cooler just makes it more complicated, more chance of leaks and failures I do agree on turbo restrictor, I run one on my 2871r if I remember they don't like oil pressure higher than 40psi, although its a while ago since I looked into that
