Got some photos?

Will have a noisy at the ecu :)

Oh, I thought everyone had had a laugh at my bird box, it looks like a Blue Peter job, but it's air tight and perfectly functional: https://sites.google.../07---update-23

When can save enough up I am hoping to buy a decent TIG welding setup and fabricate an aluminium version that will be mounted in the rear right of the boot sucking in positive air pressure from the OSR wheel arch.

Also I plan to fabricate up a load of other things like solid boost vent pipe, new packable exhaust box, breather tanks and a few other experimental things.

Oh yeah now I remember! Can you not take a mould of that make a lightweight carbon one?

The fabrication is quite rough really so would make a crap mould, why not make your own from 4mm plywood, mine only weights about 1.5 KG anyway and cost £10 and 3 hours to make. Also, if you were make your own, you can measure up exactly where you want it and adapt the shape to suit (like in the NS ear).

No need to over-engineer things like this IMO, there is too much fannying about with carbon on this forum if you ask me (not a direct dig at you Joe - you also change all the important bits on your car  :) !

You gotta love carbon! Do you have a photo of it fitted? Is the filters in line with the intake scoop as such? Does water not effect it?

It's temporarily (for the last 2 years!) mounted centrally in the boot, as that was the only place I could get the 4" inlet pipe to lead to, due to space restrictions.

Once the MAF is eliminated by the new ECU, I will reposition it at the side of the boot.

As you can see it is held down with (top quality!) rubber bungee cord. You can also see the pepper pot holes in the boot to try and improve air flow.

It is definately big! However I think I would prefer it behind the scoop as my head just says that's gonna be sucking in hot engine air. It will probably suck in some hot air behind the scoop aswell but not as much I would imagine....

I assumed it would suck lots of hot air as well, but in practice I think most of the air comes from the clam cut out area. I have never seen my IATs go over 45 degrees centigrade (even at sustained 6000 to 8000 RPM for 1 or 2 mins), though that was when it was only making 485 BHP at 1.4 Bar of boost.

Having said that placing it in an ear would be better for sure, you'd just need to cover the outside leading air filter with some sort of "shield"/baffle to stop water getting on it. Nothing a little ingenuity and measuring couldn't resolve :)

Deffo worth doing Joe, it will almost certainly give you noticeably more power, I wouldn't be surprised if you didn't get 10 or 20 BHP TBH. Carsten also did something like this and reckoned he got 30 BHP or something crazy.

Tempted.. I took collection of my Vx today so work is going to start this week when I can move my legs again! I wonder what the best type of shield would be to stop water filling it.... Hmmm

What's wrong with your legs? Broken? Don't worry I was working under my car within 3 months of breaking my back !!

When I initially wanted to install my bird-box into my NS ear, I intended to configure like this:

C. Exit 3" or 4" (or whatever) hole pointing upwards, so a 45 or 90 degree silicone bend can point it roughly towards the inlet manifold.

A. The wooden trapezoid facia of the side of the box facing directly at the mouth of the ear (thus taking most of the direct rain water whist driving).

D. The filter panels thus face towards the side of the car and the engine.

E. Some sort of wooden cowl on the leading edge of the trapezoid to help deflect rain away from the filters

B. Triangular filler section at top and bottom.

I drew a pic and posted it below to try and illustrate:

Yeah that's what I was thinking. How do aftermarket filters avoid the water issue?

Ha, I did a 5 mile run this morning and "had to" have a 2 hour snooze afterwards !

No idea TBH, many of them don't even avoid letting grit and sand though, let alone water. IMO most manufacturers simply don't care what happens, so long as they make a profit.

I prefer the idea of running standard paper filters. Think I would go down the carbon or fiberglass box though!!! What car did you use the filters from?

Just 2 bog standard Mehr VX220 turbo filters.

The difficulty with using carbon/fiberglass is how to clamp down the edges of the filter to ensure a good seal... By using wood, I simply screw thin slats on the side of the box to clamp and seal all 4 sides of each filter.

I will face this problem if/when I make it out of aluminium, will be interested to see what solution you come up with...

Don't our resident aero specialist and Chris Randall say a top scoop is a terrible place to take in air for the intake?

Something about it being contaminated by the air from the radiator I think ?
