Right then, had the car coming up a week now and not done a shed load of miles, loving it tho, roof off on the way to and from work, makes everything that little bit better. Anyway, on topic, i've noticed there is a constact ticking from the engine, nothing loud and you can't hear anything in the cabin. Now, I'm probs just being paranoid but I guess this noise is from the 'tappets' and not the chain, I've read this is more of a rattle. For info, the car is a fsh 03, july I think, so comes with the latest engine code, coming up to 60K miles and seems well maintained. Now, it's due it's a service, so could have it looked at if required. Now, my next question, where do I take it in the North East, Pack said vauxhall up here can do it, but I'm thinking I could probs take it somewhere better, for less. As far as I can see, the brake fluid has never been done, does it need doing? and if so, what should I go for? Any advice apreciated. Cramman

Mine makes a wee ticking noise too (73k) and two different mechanics have told me it's fine - so it's fine chinky chinky

Servicing wise proceed directly to >> Dan @ SPS << and tell him LazyDonkey from Scottish Elises sent you. He's an elise specialist but he knows his stuff.

Top bloke and guys up here drive from Edin to Newcastle just to use him Imnotworthy

EDIT : Oops got the link wrong

Thanks for that, just need a bit reasurance more than anything. I'll give Dan a shout then, not far from me, will get a day off work booked in. What are the thoughts on a 60K service? The works? I have no problem changing pads, disks etc but want to stand (may as well) and an expert view on it.

I'm getting my 60k service done next week at Jude Performance. Also having Braided Brake hoses fitted and 5.0 brake fluid put in for £300 plus vat. That said the hoses haven't turned up yet and the seller says he posted them 3 weeks ago so that may not be happening by the looks of things.

Ticking on start up may mean a cracked exhaust manifold - does it quieten down as the engine warms up???

Just had Dan Jude at SPS automotive do mine, very nice bloke and a true enthusiast. He did my Timing belt, water pump, front engine stabaliser, O/S engine mount, Braided brake hoses, fluid change, new expansion tank, oil and filter change, coolant change and also spotted a couple of things that needed doing but I was not charged anything for, also got the service stamp obviously. Very happy with his work and very reasonable prices, be warned though he is not desperate for work and can be difficult to get hold of, he wont answer the phone while he's working on cars, best to get him after tea.

Thanks for the info. I can't say it get quieter once it's warmed up, or maybe I've not noticed. Will have a look. If I can work it out I may add a vid so the expoerts can have a listen. Cheers, Cramman

Another potential is the auxillary belt pulley. Mine ticked from that, had already had the chain and camshafts doing. Worth a check. It is as simple as taken the belt off and spinning the pulley wheel. If you can hear a ticking then time to change it.

They are higly prone to fatigue over a period of time and have a habit of disintegrating as they are taken off. I am up in Newcastle tomorrow if you want me to pop over and give a hand.

EDIT: just sent you a text. thumbsup

Many people will have reccomendations for brake fluid. I just left it in Dans hands, just tell him what you use the car for. And no it's not all the same.

I was planning on popping into Jude on Sat, so will have a nosey and a word for you Zimmer Posted Image

Want some quotes for a few bits and bobs doing and a little bit of advice regarding some rattles and knocks, trying to stave off a full suspension refurb before October, but keep thinking "wouldn't it be nice for the car to be 100% perfect for the summer and maybe the national.
