The police said 'they stumbled upon it' it was not reported as abandoned by anyone. they alluded that there were known car thieves in the locality where it was found. It appears to be a common activity around here, what i dont understand is how they knew I had it, I've only had it about 5 weeks, live in a cul de sac off of a dead end (no one passes), just shows you dont know who drives and walks around (we have about 3 scrap metal men who drive round at least once a week for example), all the cahirty clothes vans, leaflet droppers etc

Well in a similar vein... The one night I left the car stereo front in the car was the night I left the door unlocked (and had been leaving the alarm off as a courtesy to my nieghbours.... was the night the stereo was nicked along with the rest of the contents of the cabin (£20 Boots sunglasses and some change).

Your car only has to have been spotted and then followed or even the details sold on by a dodgy salesman at the dealers from which you bought the car.

Awesome news mate, hope you get it back with the minimum of hassle now. I think a VX would be a fairly difficult and fairly silly car for an opportunist steal- firstly I bet most thieves wouldn't know it's push button start and would probably panic went the engine doesn't start off the key turning, plus it's useless as a getaway car or bank wall smasher, not much room for storing stolen stuff, and if I was a copper and saw a rare car like a VX at 3am when no one else is on the road I'd probably follow it even if it was just to look at it when you're on a boring shift. Way too many reasons to put off an average joe thief IMO.

Good to hear a great result on this and hope all goes well for your car in the future. As one of the people looking arranging on getting a car imported to Australia it would be extremely difficult (I won't say impossible) to get a car into Australia. The difficulty in getting a car through legitimate channels is hard enough let alone one through ill gotten means. I'd also hate to find out your car had this type of history. As there is only one other in Australia at the moment it wouldn't be too hard to find either so you can reasonably rule us out! Once again congrats on the end result - but just clearing the air that genuine interest here but not in any underhanded methods. Still working on the second hand Lotus importer in Australia to add to his list of available vehicles but he needs to complete further checks on compliance issues. Cheers Craig

A lot easier for those bringing a car with them. I cvoered this in another topic about importing to Oz (or trying to) but just keep your proof of ownership and use for the previous 12 months before you import it. (Ie purchase proof, rego, MOT? etc). Still a few hurdles but a lot easier than getting a government approved workshop to purchase, import and comply. Most specialise in used Japanese cars not many in UK unfortunately. Still make sure you put aside some $$ in your budget for bringing it in.

Good luck

Hot off the press, our much maligned boys in blue have found the car, un damaged about 4 miles away in a secure (electronic access)car park. They believe it was stolen to order, and parked up awaiting to see if it had atracker (as someone suggested earlier) even better my laptop was in it. many thanks for the posts chaps will start a new thread about it being found and lessons I've learnt from the experience
