Honest, I’ve searched. Tried google, found the wiki links and the link that does doesn’t give me anything. Tried here and I’m just useless with that thing. So, as per title, how do I remove the dash. I’m sure I can work it out, but I’d like to know what I’m likely to break, ie, starter button, instrument cover thing (looks delicate enough as it is). Also, while I’m on; I fancy having a go at my heater at the weekend, hence dash removal for re-seal, the little black box the heater cable attaches to, the bit that selects, hot, cold, warm air etc, what’s in it? Any pics etc. Mine is really stiff. I know I can move it with pliers but I’d like it to work if poss (I’ve already greased it up but I can only go quarter cold to hot, or col to quarter hot if you understand) chinky chinky Cramman

Think there was a topiclast week mate... 4 screws underneath the dash once the fascia panel is removed, the screws are at a 45 degree angle going into the dash top, one behind the switches (remove these), one just left of the steering wheel cowl, one under the head unit (remove head unit also) and one to the far left. Then its a buit of jiggery pokery to get it out, a little force is needed on the instrument cowel.

I may take you up on that, but no chance on Sunday, great north bike ride for me. :gayfight:

I may just have a go at the under bonnet stuff first, then dashboard at a later date, possibly you can do it whilst I'm doing your flooring.......................if you ever get it.

And do yourself a favour and don't refit the screw above the stereo. Next time you need to remove the dash, you wont have to remove the stereo as well. thumbsup

Aye, I remember reading that somewhere. Is there much point sealing it? I guess doing this will just make it harder to remove next time around!?! Or, is there certian bits you seal up?

Sealing up the ducting on the underside of the dash has no effect on future removal/refitting of the dash cover. Well worth doing as I for one was losing loads of the air volume from the heater through the leaky ductwork on the underside. Also worth taking off the duct just to clean out all of the sh!t that's growing in there.

And, reinstall the stereo before putting the dash top back on. Much easier to see and route the cables/iso block and all the gubbins when you can get at it all properly. Somebody must have had some fun in the past as mine was only using the 3 screw method (holes 2, 3 and 5 in the photo above) Halfords sell a pack of 10 screws that are identical to the ones used on the dash top. I think they are M4x19mm but can't remember for sure. Pack is about £1.59 and the screws might be the same for the steering cowl too.

Deal. And thanks for forwarding that text to me

Dash removal is easy, and sealing the ducts is a POP too. The under bonnet stuff you're on your own!

Can anybody tell me what the SRS unit in the center of the dash (the big cast ali jobby, with the black arrow) does? Is it the reciever for the remote locking/alarm?

Cheers

Airbag unit. Made by siemens. The remote receiver is part of the alarm unit. Basically enable or disable alarm and the locks get activated. I thought the alarm unit was more red but you can see in the picture on the left side of the car, to the left of where the radio would be.

Yep, airbag ECU. Alarm brain is on the passenger side and is a black plastic box with red stickers/writing on. thumbsup

Thanks again Ouchie. You are right the alarm control module is the black plastic box with the red sticker on the front located on the passangers side. Mines an M99 T2, removed it today. Contacted Abacus Alarms as you suggested, pretty helful on the subject. However, not too sure that it is the alarm module that is faulty, will be doing some more testing tonight.
With the module out the manual lock/unlock button on the steering column, again only works in the locking position. In the unlock position no response at all from the solenoids :(
At the time thought that the radio signal from the fobs, could have been recieved from another module, not the alarm unit its self.

Thanks Matt. Looks like now its a fault in the alarm unit. But still cannot understand why the manual control on the steering column still only works in one direction.

OK after a bit of testing, I still have my doubts over whether the alarm module is responsible for my problems. Refitted the module hoping that a complete discharge might reset the alarm module. Still the same problems. Removed the alarm module, and tried to operate the the central locking manually by the rocker switch located on the steering column molding. Again operates the solenoids down to the locked position, but no response when trying to unlock. The problem might lay in the central locking control unit (this is unit A12 on the wiring diagram on the TIS disk). However, not too sure of the physical location of this control unit. Anybody got any information? Thanks Dave
