(i dont advise techie to fit one as he has enough guages to worry him to death :P )

Plus, AFR (aka Chav) gauges are always really tacky looking and only belong in quadruple gauge pods down the A pillars of some turbo'd ricer, or another. :P

Oil pressure

 the aem one isnt at all chavy... it counts to 10 then sets and the digital 'hand' goes up and down B) oh and as for oil pressure thats what the light on your dash is for :P

Techie, I also don't want any permanent gauges in mine, like you say it's either right or it isn't and I just think it would detract from the driving.

its definately not going to destract me as if it does then i guess i must be very bored of driving it

I was thinking I had thrown some money at my car, but having seen yours I'm feeling a lot better! :P

I chatted to vocky about the electric water pump but I don't think the value for money argument stacked up for me, with my engine being more rev happy anyway as it's square I think that should offset retaining the standard pump.

I'm particularly interested in how you deal with the heat and noise. Do you think the heat per se would be a problem? As long as it doesn't melt anything and doesn't cause too much of a problem with intake temperatures is that sufficient?

no way does the value for money outweigh the electric water pump! when on a trackday i can leave my ignition on and it will pump the water round the system, i no longer have to ever replace the balancer chain and its going to be a very fast revving 2.2 . the 2.0 is a good idea but its too easy and i have spoke to a few people and will be very interested to see how long your pistons and rods can last at 400bhp..

heat and noise, heat isnt going to be an issue it never was, my cc system is very very big and hopefully effective. noise the harrop is alot less quieter than the m62 and exhaust i have a 2bular :P

Hopefully they will be fine (GM certainly say the rods are good for that). The chances are I will run closer to 350bhp on the road even if it could in theory dyno more. What's the cost of the waterpump and all the associated plumbing? If I could sell my brand new waterpump and brand new balancer chain to offset some of the cost then I guess it is an option.

I weighed it up with the cost of a new water pump and balance chain and saw no point in going down that route plus it's boring  But remember this then adds to the serviceable item and having a spare is probably a good idea if going on a long trip... Probably not worth it :P

So it's got a nice bright number in the middle and LED's all around the edge that go backwards and forwards? And I bet it's black when not powered? Not at all Fast & Furious then. ;)

Unless you have the facility to self-tune, I just can't see the point in the feedback from them after initial mapping of an engine. The ECU adjusts the fuelling automatically to make sure the AFR is within pre-set parameters so it's just unnecessary information and out of your control.

Yep, that OEM oil pressure light is well worthwhile. Even after I lunched my engine at Silverstone, with only, at best, something like 3 litres in there and bits of the bearings had been through the oil pump gears on the drive home, the warning light never as much as blinked. Even with turning the engine on and off three times after the bearings had gone, the light still behaved as normal. thumbsdown

The aftermarket pressure gauge was interesting but that's all. Quite interesting to see how the pressure changes with heat and swings between 60psi at idle up to 130psi at 7k rpm but not much use in reality. And certainly not worth the fecking annoying start-up ceremony and incessant bleeping when the engine wasn't running.

Oil temp gauge was worthwhile as I had no idea how long oil took to warm up before but once you know that, again it's pretty superfluous. Likewise, once you know the oil doesn't get too hot after a 30 minute track session and still has plenty of headroom left in the specs, then it's of little use in reality on a day-to-day basis.

That's why they're going. Although I may replace the sensors with some others and log the readings to the PerformanceBox when on track, as that might make for some useful information - especially if it reveals any surge/starvation issues in oil pressure during hard cornering (really wish I hadn't flogged the DL1 logger that came fitted to the car when I bought it).

Have you got a level sensor Matt?

Nope, not at the moment. I'm assuming this B207R engine sat in the garage has one but I'll wait until I kill this engine for that.

Indeed to be honest I see no point in any gauges apart from Clock Battery Oil temps and pressure But if I didn't have the sideband I would be driving it around now when the fueling varies from below 12 Afr and above 17! so more than probably caused some issues with the bores or something else more expensive I could after mapping take them our but one I am getting really fed up with causing more work and hassle for myself  and two we all know I'm not going to stop modding so will probably be useful in the future  Maybe I should get an oil temp/pressure sensor.... Will wait until you take yours out :P muncher if you wouldn't mind making a mould for some a pillar dash mounts that would be good  I will video the start up of the flashing light show tomorrow  maybe I should fit an inline switch for when I drive it at night

For goodness sake... You'd have been better off buying a bloody Focus RS or playstation 3 at this rate. Gauges are for pussies... You only need to gauges: 1. Your arse - tells you when things are about to go wrong 2. Your dick - tells you when things have just gone right. Simples
