Please can someone post a picture of the gear selector mechanism on the gearbox or pm me for an email address to send one to.

If you mean where the cables meet the knuckles outside the gearbox, then here:
Top one is the forward and back selection on the gearstick, the lower one (closest to the bell housing is the left to right, if memory serves me correctly).
