Ok ive only had my vx for few months now and so far im loving it ,,,,,,, but i made the mistake of misjudging the petrol gauge and ran out ...im a tit. Anyway after topping the tank up it started no problem but after few days on drive unused it now wont start, at first i thought the battery has died due to the cold weather but readings say it is fine, car is turning over but just not catching. Fuel filter blocked maybe?. any help would be greatly appriciated thx

Now if I remember rightly, Someone talked of a fuel cut-off switch under the bonnet somewhere. Might be that, but can't remember where it is.

Can't see why the fuel cut off would come into play....My money would be some crap frpm the bottom of the tank having been sucked into the fuel filter. Put as new one in, and see if it goes then. It's a fairly long run from tank to spark plug...You will have a load of air in the fuel line to get rid of too

Not sure if turning the ignition on and off a handfull of times would help, as the fuel pump will prime itself each time and start moving the fuel around.

Is the fuel filter easily accessible?

Hmmmm. Not fantastically accessible on a standard car with an airbox. It's low down on the nearside bulkhead (circled in yellow) and if your car has the original airbox, it's probably easier to go from underneath. Less of an issue with a car running an aftermarket induction setup as you've probably got just about enough space to go through the wheelarch.



If you have an NA getting hold of the correct filter can be a pain in the arse as invariably, you get supplied with the wrong version.

cheers for advice guys i will be replacing the fuel filter later on tonight, should be easier than expected since i already have the air filter box out, just put in new green filter. Does anyone know where this fuel cut off switch is at just so i can check it. Thx all

That picture was from 3+ years ago (notice the slight lack of supercharger or even the 2.4 manifold ). They lasted 3,000 miles until all four got deposited in the bin.

Part number is allegedly 9198066 but even AutoVaux seem to send through the wrong filter (maybe an Astra/Vectra?) that doesn't have the correct thread on it.

I got mine from a Vauxhall dealer (Archie Moss) unloading surplus VX parts on fleaBay for about £6, so no idea what the regular price is.

Press in the valve (like a car tyre valve) that is on the fuel rail. (front top of cylinder head, off side.) Even with the engine all switch off, it should spray out a fine jet of fuel when you prss in the valve by hand. Watch your eyes etc with the small amount of fuel that comes out. This with prove that the fuel is the problem, if no high pressure fuel comes out. i.e pump, pump pick up strainer, pump electrical feed, fuel filter...... The fuel filter should last years, but running out puts the dirt into the system some times, as you know.... btw - charge the battery anyway...

Have you tried the fuel cut off switch yet. Only takes 10 secs to eliminate it. Mine wouldn't fire up properly a few weeks ago and although there was no reason why the cut off switch should have triggered following a battery failure it indeed had Logic is something that these cars dont have!

It won't be a blocked fuel filter. You only need a tiny amount of fuel to start the car and the filter will always allow that that little amount through even if it were badly blocked. If it's not the fuel cutout switch, It is likely to be air in the pipes/fuel rail. You need to press the relief valve nipple on the fuel rail whilst the fuel pump is on. Air (and lots of fuel) will be shot out of the hole (at 45+ PSI, so watch out), thus purgeing the system. Keep an extinguisher at immediate hand, best done with a buddy on guard, clearly have no naked flames or electrical contacts nearby.

It's black rubber covered push button switch on the nearside subframe, sort of down below the header tank.

dude ur the man pressed switch and car fired up first time,,,, seen as i have new fuel filter anyway i will replace old one 1 day the weather is a little warmer. Thx for everybodys help............stupid little black switch lol
