Hi oilman. I just order 2 bottles of RED WINE Synthetic Manual Transmission 90 MT90 75W-90 GL4 for my NA gearbox. Do I need to shake the bottle before I open it? Also, is 2 bottles enough? :drink: I'm reading some people put in over 2 liters of the stuff. (A bottle is 946ml).

Manufacturer recommends 1.8L.

So F23 takes around 2 litres. Mmm so does anyone have a definitive answer to which oil is best for F23? Kind regards, Paul

I would recommend only the GM oil that can be bought directly from Vauxhall. The reason for this is that gear oil does not have the same approvals as engine oil - gear oil specifications are not licensed. This means that unlike engine oil where the engine test requirements are made available to any oil marketer willing to produce an oil for the manufacturer, a gear oil marketer with an additive company is invited to develop an oil with the OEM. Any other company that wishes to produce an oil intended to work with that equipment must guess at the specifications the OEM has set and attempt to match them. In short, only the GM branded gear oil is certain to be the correct specification.

If you need to shake the oil then the oil is too old and should be thrown away.

What? I thought that was just marketing dept speak. Are our gearboxes not just twirly bits and sprockets like all other car gearboxes? I was joking about shaking the bottle :poke: Before opening I'll put them in the boot and drive the local circuit for half an hour . rallly

Based on the fact that nobody to my knowledge has an internally worn out F23 or M32 box (to my knowledge), normal Vaux red gearbox oil will be fine. Last time I bought some it was £25 a litre.

The bearings on the diff or the bearings on the shafts please? Who was it that had a M32 braring failure, and was his M32 new on the car or a second hand unit that had a hard previous life on a heavier car?

Sorry for the delay. According to all the info I have, it needs about 1.7L in the gearbox. Cheers Tim

from what I have read, the most common to go is the lower shaft main bearing. It is the smallest main bearing in the box and carries 1st 2nd and 6th

Thanks slindborg. My transmission filling screw has the yellow marking so it's 2.35L for me. Hmmm... 2 bottles is 946ml + 946ml = Not enough. Hey Tim! Got a sampler bottle ya can throw in?

I always put 2.3L in a F23 box, it used to be 1.8L but GM altered the amount to stop gearbox failures (2nd gear) The M32 doesn't like high torque and wheel spinning, so if you own a 300bhp astra vxr and do burn outs your gearbox will die, simple as that. I use different oil in my M32 than what GM recommend, the original is similar to auto transmission fluid and was too thin for my liking.
