I'll fetch the car on friday. Will be my first drive with this setup. 500km on the german autobahn. Will post my results then. Think it will be frightening. Also a slight chance of rain. Will keep my right foot light and the traction control armed at 0...5%.

With that horse power I expect it will be blurred.

That's no moon, it's a space station! We've got five cars in the german community right now which are close to or even beyond 400PS. One even has 467PS and seems to be just lucky with that. Except for the molten aluminium grill in the bonnet just up the turbo. Another one is based on the Z22SE and develops some 385PS. Without traction control. The driver said it's "undrivable". And this week the charger broke down. Another one has a heavily modified Z20LET and develops 383PS. He cannot cope anymore with the traction control, says it has to be reconfigured. I don't think that's the problem. One problem sits behind the wheel and another one under the bonnet! You cannot expect that a VX with this power can be driven just like an astra with 70PS. Even if you have a traction control system you have to lift the right foot depending on the grip you can manage. Another chap has some 431PS now with a Z20LET and a garrett charger. He says the first three gears are somehow obsolete. And he has a longer gearbox. I am a bit curious what my first impressions will be like. :) (sorry for my poor english, it's a bit rusty)

Uwe Regelin (VX-Performance) did a test drive yesterday. His conclusion was very good. He said the car runs like hell without getting aggressive. At 6.500 rpm he wanted to shift to fifth gear but recognized he has been in fifth all the time. Fifth gear, 6.500 rpm = 260 km/h = 162 mph and the car was accelerating as if there was no limit, totally lacking a sixth gear. I am very curious. Friday I will know by myself how good this engine will go. Think I will buy a pack of diapers to go. :D

Back from the hack... Finally. Picked up the car on friday and drove all the way back from Giessen to Berlin via a friends hotel in Hanover. Had some high power issue after I had a fuel refill of only 98 octans because there was no higher octane fuel station in reach. But after two refills of 102 octane I could try out the whole of the power band. Resumee: The car goes fast as expected, but develops the power unexpected tame. If one has driven a beefed up turbo VX220 before it's an easy task to handle this setup! First thing I recognized was that the fifth gear accelerates stronger now than the fourth gear of my old engine. The acceleration from 125 to 150 mph has almost doubled, time needed is only about the half. Best thing about it: the engine is dry now. No oil spill anymore. I will do some tests early tomorrow morning to measure 0-200 km/h acceleration, 100-200 in third/fourth gear and 100-200 only in fourth. Just to have a numeric comparision with the old setup. These are my standard measurings ever since I have this car. Will post some pics and diagrams, if finished.

I am very pleased from the performance point of view. :D Had a two-hour trip to the countryside yesterday and the engine performs really stunning. Overtaking is reduced to a jump. Acceleration feels like Lt. Hikaru Sulu switches to Warp 10. Very fast car! And still very forgiving. Great! But I have to avoid traffic jams. Idle rpm is still adjusted a bit to low. Bit of a pain.

Removed almost all decals and stickers today, making the car look more a bit more mature. And harmless. 2012 - removed decals, made it look harmless 1

5th gear acceleration compared to the old engine with different setups over the years gone by. Fifth Gear Performance Gain over the last years

Jeez, it's twice as quick as it was. I take it the bump at 240 kph was a touch of wheel spin? (Gulp!)

Not wheelspin because the speed came from GPS data so there actually was a short gain of speed. Think it has been some wave in the tarmac. Or a slight glitch in GPS data. That happens some time. The engine performs marvellous. And unspectacular. OK, first two gears are a bit obsolete now, mainly because my 4 years old and worn out Hankook S1 which soon will be replaced by Federal RS-Rs. And it's interesting how the car still kicks in while shifting from 4 to 5. Aiming straight for 300km/h and up if the gearbox wasn't too slow. If anyone asks about the power, it simply is there. :) The cold engine sounds terrible though (forged pistons with 10/100mm cold clearance).

Well done Carsten :) Let us hope your engine bores last long enough for you to build a 2.00 Litre Z20LEx in time. I was sorry to read your email explaining the "issues" from Klassen, hopefully your new engine will be perfect. I think you have a very good chance of making a good one as you are very careful and deliberate in your engineering :) That graph showing your 5th gear performance increase is very very revealing. It shows how just adding approximately 40 ft/lb and 60 BHP makes a lot more difference than people imagine. The mid band torque of a turbocharger provides super fast in gear acceleration from mid revs, much more than any of the supercharged people realise. Thankfully, due to your wisdom you also have your well setup traction control to help too. BTW, did the Klassen engine have solid lifters, or was it just the forged pistons making all that noise? Let us know how the new engine build comes along.

Hi Nev, good to read something from you here! :)

BTW, did the Klassen engine have solid lifters, or was it just the forged pistons making all that noise?

No solid lifters, still the OEM hydros. Btw. his name is "Klasen" with just one 's' ;)

The oil consumption of the engine is remarkable, my estimation is some 1 litre for every 2.000km. I have no experience in forged pistons so I cannot say if this is or isn't normal. The sound of the pistons right after cold start is a bit frightening. But even if the car is hot I think I can hear some rattle noises while idling. Don't know if this is a sign of an engine aging in time lapse. Right now I still have no trust in the concept. Maybe I will see this from another perspective two years from now. But may also be the engine has died inbetween. Time will tell...
